Because
helping others is a part of being a good citizen, any service
learning project is a way to increase your citizenship skills.
However, good citizens also know about government and other
things. Here are a few ways you might combine your citizenship
project with service to the community.
- lead
a tour of the local courthouse or other government buildings
- repair
flags for the local VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars)
- visit
with veterans and write a story about them for the paper
or just for yourself
- sponsor
a voter registration drive
- host
an "appreciation day" for police officers, the
fire department, elected officials, city/county employees,
teachers, or others
- wash
fire trucks or police cars
- begin
an "adopt-a-grandparent" program
- make
a video about the history of your community
- organize
a voter registration drive
- encourage
family, friends, and neighbors to vote on Election Day
- help
with a community picnic (serve food, set up tables, pick
up trash)
- build
a Web page about your community or a community organization
- create
a "community map" of government offices, community
service organizations, landmarks, and other important community
features
- help
train new 4-H officers
- help
conduct State 4-H Congress Readiness Day for your region
What are some other ways you can help others through citizenship?
