Companion Animal Project

Nearly everyone loves a dog. And don't forget about cats, rabbits, and other small animals. Try to find ways to use your love for pets to help others. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  • walk dogs for your physically challenged neighbors
  • promote the annual rabies clinic
  • sponsor a day of free dog grooming
  • offer to dog-sit for neighbors going on vacation
  • take pets to visit with patients at the nursing home
  • help out at the humane society
  • assist with the pet show at the county fair
  • sponsor a dog food collection for the local animal shelter
  • host a community dog dip (see if a local supply store will donate the chemicals!)
  • help clean and/or paint the local animal shelter
  • host a petting zoo in the neighborhood or at a local day care
  • teach younger 4-H'ers about proper care of rabbits or other pets

Here's one idea for a project that works!

Nursing Home Cheer
The Williamson County Rabbit Rangers project group took their rabbits to a local nursing home to "cheer up the patients." While they were there, they also sang Christmas carols and gave out candy. The patients enjoyed the visit with the rabbits and the 4-H'ers. The patients wanted to hold and pet the rabbits, and "they all had a smile on their face."

How do you think animals can benefit your community?
