2001 Jr. High 4-H
Academic Conference

The second statewide project for 4-H S.O.S. was at Jr. High Academic Conference on June 14, 2001. Delegates to Academic Conference participated in service learning activities at eleven different sites throughout Knox County. Most of the service projects related to the 4-H project areas, but even in the ones that didn't were a great learning experience. Clothing Volunteers of America sorting clothing donations for the homeless "I learned to be thankful for what I have."
Dairy Foods Farragut Folklife Museum assisting with exhibits "We learned how to make good displays that many will enjoy."
Dog Human and Animal Bonds in Tennessee (H.A.B.I.T.) visiting a nursing home with a dog "I learned that people who are sick or ill still love to see and pet animals."
Food-Nutrition Ramsey House Plantation cataloging books for historic library collection "I learned how to catalog books."
Garden and Plant Science Beardsley Farm weeding, planting, watering "It was neat to learn the different opinions on herbicides. It was cool helping at a center that helps those who may not have gotten produce otherwise."
Health Sr. Citizens Home Assistance Service light housekeeping "I learned patience and love with elderly people. Sis was really sweet and she made me laugh. I wish I could have stayed with her."
Home Horticulture UT Trial Gardens weeding flower beds, working on fish pond "Learned names of flowers and how to clean ponds and feed fish."
Horse Shangri-la Therapeutic Academy of Riding (STAR) assisting in barn "I learned that these programs make a huge impact on the clients' lives and that they can even make a client's handicap better in certain ways."
Meat Science Second Harvest Food Bank sorting food donations "I learned how to box food. I felt proud because I knew that I was helping someone needy."
Poultry North Knox County Community Chest sorting clothing donations "We learned how to properly hang clothes. It felt good because we were hanging up clothes for the less fortunate."
Beef, Conservation, Dairy, Field Crops, Forestry, Petroleum Power, Sheep, Swine Ijams Nature Center exotic plant control
