4-H Electric Camp
June 26-29, 2012
"iPower the Future"
|
| 4-H Electric Camp is a fun-filled, rewarding adventure in
electricity at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. At
camp, you will learn what electricity is and how it works.
You will work with electrical specialists from across the
state
in learning centers. Each learning center will consist of hands-on
activities so that you can learn by doing. You will also have
the chance to meet other 4-H'ers from across Tennessee and
explore careers in energy, electricity and basic sciences.
Each camper
will receive a certificate, a T-shirt and items that you have
made at camp. It's really an electrifying experience! |
Print the 4-H
Electric Camp info sheet.
| The cost to attend 4-H Electric Camp is $200. This fee includes

At 4-H Electric Camp, you will explore the world of energy,
electricity and the basic sciences in fun-filled, "hands-on"
learning centers. This year's learning centers feature:
|
 |
Electronic Battery Tester - You will build your own electronics project in this "hands-on" learning activity by soldering resistors, LED's and integrated circuit (IC) chips to a printed circuit board to make a battery tester that actually measures the amount of charge a used battery still holds. |
 |
Electric Motors – Motors convert electricity into useful work. You will learn in this activity the different parts of an electric motor and how electromagnetism makes a motor turn. You will also put to use what you have learned as you build your own electric motor. |
 |
Energy Conservation – We use electricity to light our home, cook our food, play music, and operate televisions. But as we use more electricity in our homes, our electric bills rise. In this activity, you will learn how conserving electricity in your home not only helps to lower your electric bill but also helps to conserve our environment. |
 |
Green Energy Generation - Green energy will play an important role in the supply of energy in the future. When green energy sources are used, the demand for fossil fuels is reduced. This learning center will teach you about the different types of green energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and biofuels and how these energy sources are produced. |
 |
Electric Vehicles
- Campers will learn about batteries, DC current and how DC
current is used to propel electric vehicles. You will also demonstrate
your driving skills by maneuvering an electric golf cart through
an obstacle course. |
 |
Electrical Safety - Electric
power does a tremendous amount of work for us; but because it
is such a powerful force, we must be careful around it. This
learning center will teach you how to play it safe around high
voltage power lines. |

As an Electric Camp delegate, you should be the
best representative of 4-H as possible. Be an example of a model
4-H'er! |
| 1. |
Make it a point to be on time or ahead of time for each session
and event. |
| 2. |
Be a good listener. You will be receiving instructions from
some of the top electrical and energy specialists in the state.
You can impress them by your attentiveness. |
| 3. |
Smoking and chewing gum are out of place during the conference. |
| 4. |
Thoughtfulness in writing notes of appreciation to sponsors,
leaders, agents and parents will mean much to them. |
| 5. |
Share your experiences with others when you return home. Take
notes and be prepared to give an interesting and worthwhile
account of your 4-H Electric Camp experiences. |
