4-H Electric Camp is a fun-filled, rewarding adventure in electricity at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. At camp, you will learn what electricity is and how it works. You will work with electrical specialists from across the state in learning centers. Each learning center will consist of hands-on activities so that you can learn by doing. You will also have the chance to meet other 4-H'ers from across Tennessee and explore careers in energy, electricity and basic sciences. Each camper will receive a certificate, a T-shirt and items that you have made at camp. It's really an electrifying experience!

At 4-H Electric Camp, you will explore the world of energy, electricity and the basic sciences in fun-filled, "hands-on" learning centers. This year's learning centers feature:

Electronic Scavenger Hunt - A Global Positioning System (GPS) device, a set of coordinates that tell you the location of hidden treasure and a hunger for adventure are all you will need for this high-tech learning adventure.
Energy Conservation - We use electricity to light our home, cook our food, play music and operate televisions. But as we use more electricity in our homes, our electric bills rise. In this activity, you will learn how conserving electricity in your home not only helps to lower your electric bill but also helps to conserve our environment.
Electric Lamp - Electric lamps give us light. In this learning center, you will take a lamp kit and some electric insulators and make an electric lamp that will bring light to your room.
Electrical Devices with Dials - You probably know some clocks use electricity to drive small electric motors which in turn causes the hands on the dial to rotate. But, did you know that standard electric power meter is a clock-like device driven by the electricity moving through it? In this learning center, you will see how electrical devices with dials work as you build your own electric clock and learn how to read your home’s electric meter.
Electric Vehicles - Campers will learn about batteries, DC current and how DC current is used to propel electric vehicles. You will also demonstrate your driving skills by maneuvering an electric golf cart through an obstacle course.
Electrical Safety - Electric power does a tremendous amount of work for us; but because it is such a powerful force, we must be careful around it. This learning center will teach you how to play it safe around high voltage power lines.

Before coming to 4-H Electric Camp, you and your parents or guardians must sign the 4-H Activity and Event Acceptance Form (available from your county Extension office or the Tennessee 4-H forms and materials page). Be sure it is complete and accurate. Campers will be covered with a limited amount of sickness and accident insurance from the time they leave home until they return. Services of doctors will be available in Knoxville. Precautions to safeguard campers will be taken, but UT Extension cannot be responsible for accidents. Also remember when you sign this form, you are agreeing to follow all rules set up for the event.

As an Electric Camp delegate, you should be the best representative of 4-H as possible. Be an example of a model 4-H'er!

1. Make it a point to be on time or ahead of time for each session and event.
2. Be a good listener. You will be receiving instructions from some of the top electrical and energy specialists in the state. You can impress them by your attentiveness.
3. Smoking and chewing gum are out of place during the conference.
4. Thoughtfulness in writing notes of appreciation to sponsors, leaders, agents and parents will mean much to them.
5. Share your experiences with others when you return home. Take notes and be prepared to give an interesting and worthwhile account of your 4-H Electric Camp experiences.
