COFFEE
COUNTY LIVESTOCK TEAM BACK FROM DENVER
The Coffee County 4-H livestock judging team represented Tennessee
at the National Western 4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Denver,
Colorado, January 9-12. Team members were Wesley Keele, Lance Willis,
Katie Floied and Mindy Sheppard. The team placed 13th overall out
of 22 teams and was 1st in swine placings, tied for 4th in total
swine and 9th overall in placings. Mindy Sheppard was high individual
in swine placings and Lance Willis was 6th high in swine placings.
The results of the contest may be viewed on the web at www.nationalwestern.com.
The team was accompanied by 4-H agent, Steve Harris and 4-H volunteer
leader, Glenda Sheppard. While on the trip the group went snowmobiling
in Breckenridge and toured downtown Denver. Over $3000 was raised
through fund raising and local sponsorship for the trip.

GRANT WRITING/GRANT
RECEIVING
Money doesn't grow on trees, but it DOES come from grant proposals.
Justin Crowe, Tennessee 4-H Committee of Volunteer Leaders, will
conduct "Show Me the Money" a basic grant-writing training
at the State Volunteer Leader Forum, February 8, at 11:15 a.m. If
you can't attend this training yourself, send a volunteer, but only
if your county programs could use some cash.
In Justin's words, "Want free money? Who doesn't? In this
workshop we will learn the do's and don'ts of writing grant proposals.
We will also learn who has the money to give away and how to get
it. Each participant will be provided with a detailed list of grant
sources."

INVOLVING AND RETAINING
TEENS
Most counties face the challenge of 4-H drop-outs after elementary
school. We are offering training for teens and adults on proven,
successful programs that involve teens in meaningful ways and help
them continue 4-H interest throughout high school.
If teens are a priority in your county, recruit a team of savvy
teen and adult volunteers for training in each of these stellar
programs.
Service Learning
Research verifies that teens who feel they are making meaningful
contributions to the community are more likely to stay involved.
Lori Jean Mantooth has two workshops "Service Learning Activities
for Clubs and Families" and "Youth Leadership in Service,"
plus great service learning workbooks for all teen and adult forum
participants. These workshops will enable you to put volunteer teen/adult
coordinators in service learning leadership roles in your county.
Ethical Leadership
Everyone is interested in anything military right now. This is
a chance to involve a teen audience who may never have been interested
in 4-H. Humphreys County's 4-H Aspire team, in cooperation with
the Tennessee National Guard, will prepare your teen and adult volunteers
to conduct an action-packed character education and leadership course
for teens and younger 4-H'ers. This county 4-H team has conducted
statewide training for Tennessee National Guard officers who, in
turn, are prepared to work with your 4-H teens to teach the course
to others.
This is an appealing and timely opportunity for your teens! Lou
Biggers, the Aspire Team and two National Guard officers will conduct
a 3-session series for your teens and their adult volunteers.
Teens and Technology
92% of all 9-18 year-olds use the Internet. John Toman will prepare
your technology-gifted adult and teen volunteers to start and conduct
a 4-H tech team, develop a 4-H web site, and coordinate a Cyber
Senior/Cyber Teen group. His three workshops are of great interest
to high-tech teens and adults. This is a huge opportunity to train
volunteers to create new 4-H audiences in your county programs.
Sports and Fitness
Too often, teens must choose between sports and 4-H. Not in Ohio!
Not with Ohio Extension's "You, the Athlete" program,
which connects optimum nutrition, fitness and character development
for teen athletes. Kathy Cox, 4-H youth development specialist at
The Ohio State University, will train active adult and teen leaders
to conduct this 4-H sports program in your county. The Ohio State
curriculum (notebook) is available to workshop participants
for $10.00.
Workforce Preparation
Teens like money! Kathy Cox will train teen or adult leaders to
enhance county workforce prep efforts with Ohio State's excellent
4-H curriculum. Send a team of teens and adults to start a workforce
prep training team in your county.

WEATHER WON'T STOP
VOLUNTEERS!
Neither rain, snow, sleet nor hail can stop registration for our
February 7-8, 2003 Alumni/Volunteer Forum at Paris Landing State
Park, but nasty weather CAN and has slowed down registration a bit.
We've extended our deadline to enable you to contact enough volunteers
to be trained in the nine excellent simultaneous training sessions
in each of the three workshop slots on Saturday. No workshops will
be repeated at the forum, so each county needs at least nine teen
or adult volunteers for each time slot to capture all the great
learning opportunities for your county.
Saturday workshop presenters include Kathy Cox from Ohio, Robertson
County volunteers, Steve Sutton, Denise Brandon, Bridgett Smith,
Kathy Finley, Rita Lambert, Debbie Demastus, Dave Gabbern, John
Toman, Dwight Loveday, Lori Jean Mantooth, Lou Biggers and the Humphreys
County Aspire Team, Roy Upton, B.D. & Marcella Spence, Justin
Crowe, Myra Storey and Jane Fisher.
