The guidelines for the 2003 4-H June Dairy Month Poster Contest
can be found at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/ideas03/links/dairyposter03.htm.

FEBRUARY 7-8 HAS ROOM
FOR MORE
We haven't reached our 150-person goal. If you have teen or adult
volunteers and/or 4-H alumni who haven't registered for the alumni/volunteer
event, encourage them to do so. This is too good to miss. Listed
below are three of the many workshops which will be conducted at
the forum.
Meats Judging Connection
On February 8, Dwight Loveday will teach your teen and/or
adult volunteers to start an outdoor (meat) cookery project
group in your county. He has lesson plans and detailed instructions.
Horse Shows: Small-Scale
Rita Lambert has had great success with miniature (plastic,
plush, ceramic, etc.) horse shows. She uses models to teach
basic showing and judging skills. If you've wanted to involve
people who love horses, but who may or may not own horses;
send teen and/or adult volunteers to this session on February
8.
Target S.M.A.R.T.
Send teen and/or adult volunteers on February 7-8 to
take shooting sports back to your county. Friday night's
recreation includes archery, followed by workshop on Saturday. |

MEET
THE STATE 4-H STAFF! - TAMMIE (DYER) COLE
We want you to know more about the people who work in the state
4-H office. We will be featuring a different staff member each week
in Ideas. Keep reading to find out about another one of our
team.
Tammie was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, but has lived in England,
Denver, Nashville and Atlanta. At the age of 18, she went overseas
and married a U.S. Air Force serviceman. Her biggest accomplishment
is her 17 year old daughter Ashley, who was born while Tammie was
stationed at Lowrey Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado.
Her past work experiences are mostly in event planning and marketing.
While at Whittle Communications she worked for Peter Finn, a marketing
guru; Bob Hope, the former Atlanta Braves promoter; and Baseball
Hall-of-Famer Phil Niekro. She assisted in starting the Whittle
Events marketing group that worked with Coca-Cola on their Super
Bowl and Olympic efforts, as well as the first women's baseball
team, the Colorado Silver Bullets.
While working in Atlanta, she managed the Suzuki Heisman College
Tour. She was responsible for negotiating price and availability
with the colleges, as well as the team of four that were traveling
across the country in two Suzuki XL-7 vehicles. This tour took an
actual Heisman trophy to 18 college campuses across the U.S. and
took digital fan photos that were posted to Suzuki's web site. During
the tour, fans submitted votes for their favorite Heisman candidate;
Suzuki submitted the fans' favorite choice as winner for their Heisman
sponsorship vote.
She returned home after September 11 and now resides in Maryville,
Tennessee. Her responsibilities in the 4-H office are support person
for the assistant director/state 4-H leader, IRIS processing, human
resources, budgets and event planning.

OUTSTANDING 4-H ALUMNI
Two outstanding Tennessee 4-H alumni will be recognized at State
4-H Congress. Nominate your county's best by emailing (lwilkers@utk.edu)
or faxing (865-974-1628) your county's one-page recommendation by
February 7. Include the nominee's name, address, phone, email, 4-H
membership highlights and adult contribution to the community. These
nominations do not require a special form this year. Each county
can nominate two alumni by merely submitting a one-page (or less)
recommendation letter. Letters will be reviewed by the Tennessee
4-H Alumni board on February 8 for selection of district and state
honorees.

RESULTS FROM 4-H
MARKET HOG SHOW
Eighty-seven exhibitors from 21 counties exhibited 274 head of
swine at the 2003 State 4-H Market Hog Show. This is about a 25%
increase over recent years. The show also reflected an increase
in show quality. The top five pigs in the ultrasound carcass class
cut above 58 percent lean and the top 10 were all over 57 percent
lean. Williamson County had the most exhibitors and the Central
District had the most entries. Mr. Dave Walter of Warren, IN judged
the show and presented a talk regarding show ring ethics.
Kayla Kimes (Clay), Mark Giffen (Blount) and James Mathis (Hickman)
earned the premier exhibitor awards for the junior, junior high
and senior divisions, respectively. Premier exhibitor awards are
based on a combined score of showmanship, skillathon and animal
placing. Cason McInturff (Williamson) exhibited the grand champion
and Tosh Farms of Henry, TN purchased his hog for $7.50 per pound.
Kayla Werner (Williamson) showed the reserve grand champion and
Gold Kist Pork Division of Jefferson, GA purchased her hog for $6.50
per pound. James Mathis (Hickman) exhibited the champion pen-of-three
and Jacqueline Ray (Moore) showed the reserve champion pen-of-three.
Tennessee Livestock Producers purchased both champion pens for $.55
per pound. The top pig in the ultrasound carcass class yielded a
58.99 percent lean and belonged to Brittany Hix (Clay).
