LEADERSHIP GRANTS Youth need safe and inviting places to enrich their basic skills outside of school– places that are abundant with positive adult influences where they can enhance their knowledge of the academic world and beyond. With this in mind, National 4-H Council encourages applicants for the Literacy Education/Youth Leadership Grant to create literacy programming in after-school settings. This National 4-H Youth Grants Program will provide community action grants in the amounts of $500 to $2,000 to stimulate literacy education nationwide. Grants will be awarded for after-school, out-of-school, and in-school programs in support of ongoing literacy education or to stimulate new and creative youth-led literacy education programs. (Although grants will be awarded primarily for programs in after-school settings, other types of programs are encouraged to apply.) The application deadline is Tuesday April 29, 2003. MINI-GRANT PROPOSALS DUE APRIL 15 Proposals for 4-H Seeds of Service mini-grants are due to the state 4-H office by April 15. Proposals may request up to $2000 for youth-led service learning projects that meet real community needs and offer a strong learning component for youth participants. Lori Jean Mantooth 4-H SHEEP CONFERENCE INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON WEB SITE 4-H members, parents and volunteer leaders who have an interest in the sheep project should plan to attend the Tennessee 4-H Sheep Conference at the Clyde M. York 4-H Center in Crossville, May 16-17. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. CDT on Friday; the conference will conclude shortly after lunch on Saturday. Cost for the weekend will be $31.00 per person. Counties should let their district office know their estimated attendance by May 3. Information on the conference is available on the Tennessee 4-H web site at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/sheepconf/. Highlights of the conference will be a Shepherd's Contest, Lamb Bowl, and project exhibit competition. The Shepherd’s Contest is an event testing the members’ knowledge of sheep and skill in selecting, grooming and showing sheep. Participants in the Lamb Bowl will answer questions in an quiz patterned after the TV College Bowl show. The project exhibit competition allows the 4-H’ers to share accomplishments in their sheep project with others. The conference offers a special opportunity for 4-H members with a minimum of three years experience in showing sheep. A grooming and showing demonstration contest will be held for teams of two members. While one team member grooms the lamb, the other team member will explain the methods and procedures being used. Competition will be scored not only on how well they groom and show the lambs, but also on how well they teach the procedures. Members will actually get to show a lamb during the Shepherd's Contest and receive tips on proper showmanship techniques. This will be an excellent opportunity for everyone to have their questions answered by the experts. The annual meeting of the Tennessee Junior Sheep Producers Association will also take place on Saturday afternoon. New officers will be selected. Dues are $2.00 per member. This is a great opportunity for sheep project members and their families. Please encourage them to attend and make them aware of the web site. Steve Sutton MEET THE STATE 4-H STAFF! - PAT WHITAKER This week we are again featuring one of our area 4-H specialists
in Ideas. Keep reading to find out about another of our team members. Pat came to the district staff in 1995 after three years involvement in developing the 4-H B.E.S.T. curriculum in Rutherford County. Over the prior ten years she alternated between program assistant, volunteer leader and 4-H mom as the need arose. Pat’s 4-H career began as a 4-H member in Rutherford County under the leadership of Ben Powell. Upon graduation from Middle Tennessee State University in home economics, she became a 4-H agent in Sullivan County in 1969. There she met and married Dave Whitaker and their careers paralleled in Virginia Extension. Pat was the first urban 4-H Agent in the City of Lynchburg, Virginia, initialing programs like 4-H on Wheels (roller skating) and the TV series, “Mulligan Stew.” That was followed by joining the Virginia state 4-H staff and giving leadership to Share the Fun (sounds familiar) while completing a M.S. degree in child development at Virginia Tech. There was a long pause in career pursuits to raise a family. Pat and Dave have three children. Beau is a second year vet school student at Texas A&M; Ashley works for Ardent Health Services in Nashville; Boone is a part-time student at MTSU and roofer. Dave is the director of horse science at Middle Tennessee State University. They enjoy the solitude of the family farm in Lascassas where they garden, raise sheep, a few chickens and horses or fish on the East Fork of Stones River. Steve Sutton SHOW “UNLIMITED SUPPORT” AT STATE 4-H CONGRESS The service-learning project for 2003 State 4-H Congress is Project Unlimited Support. 4-H is working in conjunction with Project U.S., a grassroots effort started in Nashville to show support for U.S. military personnel and their families. Delegates, leaders, and Extension personnel can collect toiletries, international phone cards, and letters of support for the troops and families. Cards and letters should be addressed to “Dear Military Member” and not be in envelopes. At Congress, turn in donations at the designated location on Sunday, April 13. All delegates who participate in the project will receive a token of recognition to help them show their patriotism. The district with the highest percentage of it delegation participating will enjoy a pizza party hosted by 4-H Seeds of Service. Lori Jean Mantooth STATE 4-H POSTER WINNERS ANNOUNCED Judging has been completed for the State 4-H Poster Art Contest and the winners selected. The following members have state-winning entries. Anna Spence, Crockett County Steve Sutton STATE DAIRY BOWL ENTRIES DUE SOON Dairy Bowl entries are due on May 1, 2003. The state contest will be held June 5, 2003 at the Central District office in Nashville in conjunction with the June Dairy Month Kick Off luncheon. Team members and alternates must be registered by sending names, addresses and grades as of January 1, 2003 to Dr. Gary Rogers, 201D McCord Hall, 2640 Morgan Circle, Knoxville, TN 37996-4500 or grogers2@Tennessee.edu. Agents are responsible for certifying eligibility. Each county may enter up to two senior and two junior high teams. Each senior team will consist of four members from their county designated by a coach or agent. The second junior high team will be allowed to have only three members if the first has four. One or more alternates may be entered as substitutes. Senior youth may only participate once at the national contest in Louisville. Senior Age Division: Contestants must be 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th graders as of January 1, 2003. Team members must have reached their 15th birthday during the current contest year, but have not passed their 19th birthday. (Contestants may attend a college beyond high school to participate in Louisville. However, club members who enroll in or audit a dairy science or animal science course prior to the fall term are not eligible.) Junior High Age Division: Contestants must be 6th, 7th or 8th graders as of January 1, 2003. Copies of the rules or the Tennessee Dairy Bowl Manual are available from Dr. Roger’s office. Steve Sutton “UNLIMITED SUPPORT” FOR 4-H ALUMNI OVERSEAS Many former Tennessee 4-H’ers are currently serving our country in Iraq, Kuwait, and other locations around the world. At Congress, delegates can stop by the “service station” to write letters to military personnel. We would like to send letters to 4-H alumni or other 4-H supporters who are serving overseas, as well as to other members of the military. If you have the name and address of a member of the armed forces who would like to hear from current 4-H’ers, please send the information to LMantoo1@utk.edu or 865-974-2128 before Wednesday, April 9. 4-H’ers at Congress will then have the opportunity to write to these brave men and women.
