MEET THE STATE 4-H STAFF! - NEAL SMITH
This week finishes up the features on members of the state
4-H staff. We hope you have enjoyed learning more about us. Keep
reading to find out about another of our area 4-H specialists.
Neal Smith serves as the area 4-H specialist in the 21 county Western
District. He has served in this capacity since April of 1997. His
main responsibility is to provide the 4-H staff in the Western District
the resource materials and assistance they need to provide positive
youth development experiences for their audiences. Neal develops
curricula, facilitates training sessions, assists with county programming
efforts and makes visits with new agents. Other district responsibilities
include providing leadership to the district All Star Council, volunteer
leaders and career and consumer education programs.
In addition to Neal’s district duties, he has served as the
State 4-H Horse Championships Western division show manager and
staging chairman for the past 10+ years. He also contributed to
the development of the state “On My Own” curriculum
and has been a presenter at NAE4-HA conferences.
Neal received his B.S. degree in Agriculture-Animal Science from
The University of Tennessee at Martin and a M.S. in Agriculture
and Extension Education from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
He started his Extension career in 1984 as a 4-H agriculture agent
in Hardin County and held that position for 12 years before moving
to the district office.
Neal lives in Savannah with his wife Mary Grace and their two daughters,
Emily (11) and Rachel (8). His hobbies include riding horses, hunting,
drawing and travel.

noticed it has a new look! We think you’ll find it much more
colorful and user-friendly. Be sure to check it out at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/.
A special thanks to Lynn Scott, Web design editor in the UTIA Information
Technology department for helping us in designing and organizing
