PRINT SHEEP CONFERENCE INFORMATION FROM
WEB SITE
We hope your 4-H sheep project members, their parents and volunteer
leaders are planning to attend State 4-H Sheep Conference May 16-17
in Crossville. The conference is excellent in preparing new members
for the upcoming show season, as well as providing older, more experienced
members teaching and leadership roles.
Information on the conference may be found at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/sheepconf/.
You will also find the program
in a printable format (PDF file) on the Web site.

STATE CONGRESS DELEGATES PROVIDE “UNLIMITED
SUPPORT”
(Taken from a story by Glen Liford, Tennessee
Cooperator)
Military personnel and their families will benefit from the power
of 4-H after more than 16,000 items were collected as part of Project
Unlimited Support, a service learning initiative undertaken by 4-H’ers
attending the 2003 State 4-H Congress in Nashville.
More than 500 youth, volunteer leaders and Extension personnel
attended the event. Prior to Congress, 4-H groups across the state
collected much-needed items for military personnel serving in the
Middle East and their families. Donations included toiletry essentials
such as shampoo, toothpaste, mouthwash and deodorant. International
phone cards and words of encouragement on assorted cards and notes
were collected too.
Grundy and Lincoln county 4-H groups led the project’s efforts,
each collecting more than 5,000 items. Retired Air Force Lieutenant
Colonel Randy Harmon accepted the items on behalf of Project Unlimited
Support and spoke to the group on Tuesday of Congress.
Project Unlimited Support is a nationwide grassroots effort to
show support for America’s armed forces. Many troops must
leave the country in a hurry and leave behind non-mission essential
items. The project benefits both military personnel and their families
at Fort Campbell. Personnel at Charleston Air Force Base, SC, coordinates
the shipment of donations overseas.
For more information on Project Unlimited Support, including history,
sample letters, photos and more, visit the program’s Web site
at www.projectus.org/. Check
the 4-H S.O.S. site at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/sos/
for pictures and information on the Congress project.

SUMMER 4-H/JAPANESE EXCHANGE
We still have three wonderful Japanese children waiting to be assigned
to a host family in Tennessee. They would love to share with an
American family. Most of them have been planning this trip for two
years. The 4-H families will host from July 21 to August 18. This
is a great opportunity for families to have an international experience.
Remind your 4-H members that all international activities are part
of the 4-H citizenship project.
The delegates are:
Aiko Hattori (female, 14 years
old) - likes to play ping-pong and likes to draw. One experience
she is looking forward to is eating American food!
Shu Ando (male,12 years old) - likes
drawing pictures and is very good at it. He enjoys playing
ping-pong and playing tennis. He is looking forward to playing
tennis with his host brother and would like to go hiking.
Shunsuke Tominaga (male, 12 years
old) - likes to bowl, play softball and volleyball. He is
interested in finding differences between America and Japan.
He would like to bowl, play tennis, ping-pong and softball
during his visit. |
I am also looking for host families for the Japanese chaperone.
This year Yasumasa Uejima (male, 49 years
old) will be bringing the Japanese delegation. His interest and
hobbies include soccer, reading, computers and watching movies.
He is very interested in learning more about our customs and the
American lifestyle.
I greatly appreciate your support and efforts in finding families
to host our Japanese friends. Hosting an exchange student offers
a very unique experience for the whole family. Please share this
information with your 4-H families.
If you have interested families, please call me at (865) 577-9963
as soon as possible.
