BRING CD’S FOR ACADEMIC CONFERENCE DANCE

We have a volunteer leader who will be providing music for the dance at Academic Conference. As you correspond with your delegates, please encourage them to bring any CD’s they want played, marked clearly with their name and county. This will help ensure that we have a variety of music that appeals to everyone.

SERVICE LEARNING DELEGATES TO NATIONAL 4-H CONGRESS

Recently, the Tennessee 4-H program has had an increased emphasis on service learning. Thousands of 4-H’ers are learning valuable life skills as they meet genuine needs in the community. To recognize Level II 4-H’ers who have exhibited outstanding service learning efforts, 4-H Seeds of Service will award four trips to National 4-H Congress, scheduled for November 28-December 2 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The application and selection process is as follows:

1. Any Level II 4-H’er (in 11th or 12th grade as of January 1, 2003) who has not previously attended National 4-H Congress may submit a 4-H S.O.S. Service Learning Portfolio to the state 4-H office no later than August 15, 2003.
2. A panel of judges will review the portfolios and select ten (10) finalists to participate in a phone interview.
3. After the interviews, 4-H S.O.S. will name four (4) 4-H’ers as state winners in service learning and delegates to National 4-H Congress.

Notes:

* This contest is open to all eligible 4-H’ers. Selection is based solely on service learning activity.
* Portfolios should reflect both the service and what the 4-H’er learned from the experience.
* The 4-H’er should attach examples of reflection activities and recognition/ beneficiary response and must attach his/her “service learning story” and pictures.
* A 4-H’er may only attend National 4-H Congress one time as a delegate.

Download a copy of the Service Learning Portfolio from the forms page of the 4-H website or contact the state 4-H office. Please direct questions to Lori Jean Mantooth at 865-974-2128 or LMantoo1@utk.edu.

SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS AT ACADEMIC CONFERENCE

On the afternoon of June 12, delegates attending Junior High 4-H Academic Conference will participate in service learning projects at agencies throughout the Knoxville area. Service sites include Ijams Nature Center, Beardsley Community Farm, Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store, the Florence Chrittenton Agency, Goodwill Industries, The UT Gardens, and others. The afternoon will give the 4-H’ers an opportunity to utilize the project knowledge they gain at Academic Conference. The service activities will also encourage the young people to continue to serve others once they return home.

Please prepare your delegates for the possibility that they may be serving outside and will possibly get dirty. 4-H Seeds of Service will provide T-shirts for the delegates and leaders to wear during the service activities.

TARGET S.M.A.R.T. CAMPBOREE REGISTRATION

The camper registration deadline for the Target S.M.A.R.T. Campboree is June 13. If you need additional promotional brochures, contact Jill Martz in the state 4-H office. Discipline quotas are filled as they are received and registration can be completed electronically. Transportation is the responsibility of the campers. Counties are billed by the 4-H Center once campers arrive at camp. There is a non-refundable deposit collected for any camper who registers and does not participate. Volunteer leaders are encouraged to come with the campers and participate at no charge. If you have campers who want to participate and have difficulty finding a leader, you may want to check with other counties to see if their leaders are willing to chaperon both groups. This is a great opportunity to get grandparents and parents involved.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY RECEIVES YOUTH IN ACTION/COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING GRANT

What do 4-H members and Master Gardeners have in common? As it turns out, many things! An interest in community, volunteerism and developing life skills are just a few of the shared interests of these two groups.

These commonalities have helped the 4-H forestry project group in Williamson County receive a $1,000.00 grant from Deft, Inc., through the National 4-H Council. Master Gardeners play a vital role in this youth-adult partnership by providing 4-H members with educational and advisory support throughout the project as well as being a part of implementation and evaluation. Matching funds and other in-kind contributions bring the total budget for this grant project to over $4,000.00.

The project involves a reforestation effort on public domain that would restore a forest habitat, reduce erosion, attract wildlife, provide an outdoor classroom setting for youth and improve public awareness of forest stewardship.

Williamson County 4-H member Kyle Berk is the youth coordinator for the project.
