ACADEMIC CONFERENCE SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Delegates to 2003 Junrio High 4-H Academic Conference will have the unique opportunity to spend an entire afternoon volunteering at a Knoxville-area community agency. The theme of the afternoon is “Planting Seeds for Tomorrow.” While the vet Science and dog groups are involved in special activities, the other delegates will conduct the following service learning projects:

* Beardsley Community Farm: Garden
* Florence Chrittenton Agency: Conservation, plant science
* Goodwill Industries: Clothing, Dairy foods, food-nutrition
* Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store: Health
* Ijams Nature Center: Beef, dairy, forestry, meat science, petroleum power, poultry, sheep, swine
* Shangri-la Therapeutic Academy of Riding (STAR): Horse
* The UT Gardens: Home horticulture, field crops

GET READY FOR ROUNUP!

The 80th State 4-H Roundup will be held on the UT-Martin campus, July 21-25. State project finalists have been selected and should plan to attend Roundup. Current state winners in citizenship and leadership, all active 4-H All Stars and current 4-H'ers who have previously attended National 4-H Congress as project winners may also attend Roundup.

Registration will be online line and should be available by mid-June. When the registration is ready, it will posted on the Web site and announced in Ideas. Each district office will be sending information about cost, transportation and other pertinent information. Each district office also has a supply of Roundup brochures to assist you in marketing Roundup. Project winners will attend on scholarship. 4-H’ers who are not state finalists and attending as All Star members will need to pay a registration fee. Watch for more to come about Roundup in upcoming issues of Ideas.

MAURY COUNTY IS STATE DAIRY BOWL WINNER

The State 4-H Dairy Bowl was held on June 5 in conjunction with the “June is Dairy Month” Kickoff luncheon in Nashville. A team from Maury County composed of Eric Gardner, Will Baker, Robby Jarrett and Casey Favors took top honors in the senior division. They will represent Tennessee in the 2003 Invitational Dairy Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Kentucky this November.

Wilson County was the winner in the junior high division of the contest. Team members were Jeffery Turner, Wenter Davis and Matthew Corn. Coffee County was second place with Maury County completing the field of junior high teams.

Donor for this event is the Dairy Farmers of America. Special thanks to Dr. Gary Rogers and Ms. Kristy Hill, Extension dairy specialists for their leadership in conducting this educational program.

STATE 4-H HORSE JUDGING SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 24

Twelve district-winning teams will compete in the State 4-H Horse Judging Contest, Tuesday, June 24, during the 2003 State 4-H Horse Championships in Shelbyville. The event will begin at 12:00 noon and climax with an awards banquet at 6:00 p.m. in the Blue Ribbon Room on the Celebration grounds. Teams participating include:

Obion County
Chester County
Sumner County (2 teams)
Wilson County
Putnam County
Bradley County
Fentress County
Rhea County
Jefferson County
Knox County
Sullivan County

STATE FINALISTS NAMED FOR ROUNDUP

Congratulations to all counties who have finalists selected for state competition at 4-H Roundup. The lists have been sent to the district offices. Please let us know immediately if one of your state finalists will not be able to attend Roundup. Record scores will be sent to each county following Roundup.

TEEN ADVENTURE REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JUNE 11

The deadline to register 4-H’ers for Teen Adventure Weekend has been extended to June 11. Counties may continue to enter youth and all adult leaders through the on-line database. Please note that the horse back riding challenge is already full, but the other options still have slots left.

Teen Adventure is June 19-21 at Clyde York 4-H Center in Crossville. Registration is June 19 at 1:00 p.m. (CDT). The program ends at 10:30 on Saturday.

After June 11, any changes in registration should be e-mailed to Lori Jean Mantooth at LMantoo1@utk.edu.
