SEVIER COUNTY RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION
FOR SERVICE
Sevier County 4-H has won a national award in Colgate-Palmolive’s
30th anniversary search for the country’s best community projects
by young Americans. Their “4-H Hooked on Helping Hunger”
project conducted last fall won high honors in the 2003 “Colgate
Youth for American campaign.
Each year, U.S. clubs and troops of six national youth organizations
(Girl Scouts of the USA, Boy Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA, Girls
Incorporated, 4-H and Boys & Girls Clubs of America) are invited
to enter their best community service projects for consideration.
The effort was launched by Colgate-Palmolive in 1973 to encourage
community involvement among young people and cash grants are awarded
for the best projects in each of the organizations annually.
The Sevier County project was chosen from among more than 2000
entries nation-wide and was recognized with a $100.00 prize in the
4-H division. 4-H members donated over 4,200 cans of tuna, along
with more than $1500 to the Sevier County Food Ministry.
Sevier County 4-H agent Glenn Turner says the project was selected
to give 4-H members a clear understanding of hunger in the community
and to help them see how their donations can help and are used.
The goal was one can per member and over 1500 4-H members participated.
The projects slogan was “One Can Can Make a Difference.”
Steve Streiberg, director at the Sevier County Food Ministry, said
of the project, “The tuna boats have arrived at the Sevier
County Food Ministry and the nets are overflowing. The 4-H Clubs
have proven to be skilled, expert fishermen and the catch exceeded
our largest expectations.”
Colgate-Palmolive has awarded nearly $6 million to America’s
young people through Youth for America. The program, which is the
longest-running corporate-sponsored program benefitting youth, has
been honored by The White House under five different administrations.
It also has been recognized by the Points of Light Foundation, received
a Freedoms Foundation Award and been praised each year by members
of Congress, governors and mayors throughout the nation.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the program, Colgate developed
a special “Best of YFA” booklet featuring winning project
ideas for youth clubs to implement. A downloadable version of the
free booklet and more information about the program is available
on the website at www.youthforamerica.com.
Entry forms for the 2003/2004 Youth for America campaign will be
available this fall through local offices of the six national youth
organizations or by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope to
Colgate Youth for America, P.O. Box 1058, FDR Station, New York,
N.Y. 10150-1058. Visitors to www.youthforamerica.com
will find further details, a complete list of winners and a printable
entry form for next year’s competition.
