CAR WASH AT ROUNDUP

Delegates and leaders at 4-H Roundup will have the chance to help UTM and the Martin community fulfill a dream. 4-H’ers will host a car wash–the “largest car wash Martin has ever seen”–to raise money for the Brian Brown Memorial Greenway.

Brian Brown was the director of the UTM Campus Recreation Program. He was killed in 2000 when he was struck by a truck while riding his bicycle along the highway. He was the first to envision a multi-purpose trail in and around Martin and the UTM campus. The money raised through the car wash on Wednesday afternoon will help to build Brian’s dream.

MAKE SEPTEMBER 11TH A DAY OF SERVICE

One Day’s Pay recently announced an initiative urging all Americans, businesses, schools and other groups to honor the victims and heroes of the terrorist attacks by permanently observing September 11th as a voluntarily observed national day of service. Supported by the Coalition of 9-11 Families, the Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network, Youth Service America, Citizen Corps, Tuesday’s Children, September Space and other leading organizations and individuals, One Day’s Pay’s goal is to document the participation of more than 30 million people annually by 2010. Individuals and organizations can complete service projects of their choice on or around September 11th. What a wonderful opportunity to make something great emerge from the despair of that day. To find out more information or to join the initiative visit www.onedayspay.org.

STATE JUNIOR DAIRY SHOW DATE CHANGE

The date for the Tennessee Dairy Expo in Murfreesboro has been changed by their advisory board due to facility availability. This change also affects State Junior Dairy Show as it is hosted by and sponsored through the event. The new dates are October 8-11 with the following schedule:

October 9 - Open Show
October 10 - State Junior Showmanship Competition
October 11 - State Junior Dairy Show

Our dairy specialists apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. They are in the process of notifying all exhibitors who participated in last year’s event by letter. However, they do not have addresses for new exhibitors. Please help get the word out if you know of any new exhibitors in your county. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact either Gary Rogers <grogers@tennessee.edu> or Kristy Hill <khill8@tennessee.edu>.

TENNESSEE 4-H RECEIVES RURAL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT GRANT

The University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service has been awarded a $34,000 grant to help develop rural communities across Tennessee. The grant is funded under an agreement with the National 4-H Council and USDA. The grant will provide funding to equip and empower rural teen and adult volunteers to identify local youth needs, identify community assets and obstacles, create action plans to further develop community assets, and share the successes of the program. More than 1000 youth and adults will be trained over the next year in youth/ adult partnerships, community asset mapping and project planning.

A 25-member task force will be selected to assist in the program design, training of participants, and program implementation. This task force will consist of both youth and adults working in partnerships. If you or someone you know is interested in empowering youth and adults in your area, serving on the task force, or simply would like more information, please contact me at the state 4-H office.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied.
