CURRICULUM OFFER FOR 4-H PROJECT GROUPS

We have a special opportunity for counties with project groups! We have purchased computer, food-nutrition and sheep curricula from the National 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System, Inc. These high quality, experientially based materials will be offered free of charge to counties having identified leaders for these project group areas.

Listed below are URL addresses for each curriculum. You should be able to click on them and get a description of the materials.

Computer: www.n4hccs.org/shop/products.asp?action=list&cat=6&subcat=33
Food-Nutrition: www.n4hccs.org/shop/products.asp?action=list&cat=9&subcat=40
Sheep: www.n4hccs.org/shop/products.asp?action=list&cat=5&subcat=29

If you would like to order any of the curriculum, please return the order form to the state 4-H office by October 1. You may access the order form at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/ideas03/attach/4HCCSorderform.pdf. You will need to fill out the order form completely in order to receive the material, including the name and address of the person leading each project group. We will then send you a complete set of the materials (three youth guides) for each 4-H’er, as well as a set for the project leader with the Helper’s Guide.

Each group receiving the material will also need to do a followup evaluation. This will be a simple one-page sheet to find out how the curriculum was used and what happened as a result of it being used in the project group.

Again, these materials are for use with project groups. They are not to be passed out in inschool clubs. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me.

ENROLLMENT UPDATE

Congratulations and thanks to all counties who met the enrollment deadline. A brief look at the reports indicates that counties have been more diligent and accurate in reporting. As of August 22 nearly all counties were accounted for. This will facilitate getting the state report finished so that counties can rollover and begin a new enrollment year.

New enrollment forms, with changes in race and ethnicity as determined by CSREES and USDA, are available from the enrollment web site at www.utextension.utk.edu/4h/blueribbon/. Please use these new forms to enroll your 2004 4-H members.

If there are no glitches with the federal CES-237 report, rollover directions are anticipated to be available by the first week of October.

In 2004 all activities collected on the supplemental form will need to be reported through the Blue Ribbon program. This will allow for more accurate reporting that reflects the scope of the Tennessee 4-H program.

$$ FUNDING FOR ‘EM $$: WANDA RUST NEWBY 4-H ENDOWMENT ESTABLISHED

The Family and Consumer Education Clubs of Campbell County have established an endowment fund within the Tennessee 4-H Foundation in memory of Wanda Rust Newby. The endowment will benefit Campbell County 4-H members while providing a means of remembering Wanda and her positive influence on Extension clientele, friends and co-workers.

The Campbell County FCE began the endowment project by printing a cookbook of Wanda’s recipes - her own, as well as those shared by her many friends. Cookbooks are still available by contacting Shirley Morgan, principal secretary in the Campbell County UT Extension office.

Additionally, the Tennessee 4-H Foundation is accepting memorial gifts in support of the endowment. Those wishing to contribute may send their gift to the Tennessee 4-H Foundation/Wanda Rust Newby Endowment, 2621 Morgan Circle, 205 Morgan Hall, Knoxville, TN 37996-4510.

Wanda’s Extension career spanned 29 years. The impact of her work will be felt for many generations. She started Friends of Jacksboro Public Library which is a wonderful project that the FCE Women continue to raise funds for the library. She was past president of Historical Society in Campbell County. Wanda was a founding member of the Davis Chapel Community Association. She started the first cancer support group in the county which was about 20 years ago. She met with several groups in the county to teach and give her support to all. Wanda attended The University of Tennessee and was an avid supporter of UT. She even convinced UT presidents of years past that 4-H pumpkin painting was something they should try.

Wanda is sorely missed by her co-workers, the Campbell County FCE members, and especially by her husband, James Newby, who treasures their time together watching the sun come up from their mountain home.

I hope you will join me and the Campbell County FCE members in endowing the Wanda Rust Newby Fund.

Winning entries from county and regional fairs or the State 4-H Photo Search Contest would certainly be appropriate. Thirteen photographs will be selected. These original photographs will be gallery mounted and framed with a brass plate engraved with the title and photographer’s name will be attached. The winning photos will be on display at the National 4-H Conference Center from September 2004 through November 2004 and will be posted on their Web site.

4. Telephone number
5. List of awards that submitted photographs have received (county, state, 4-H or other)

7. Photo submissions should be 8"x10", in color and in a horizontal format. Vertical shots will be accepted only if they can be cropped to fit the horizontal format of the calendar.
8. Please do not submit digital photos printed on a home printer. Have the print developed at a photo processing store.

All submissions will be returned late August 2004, if not selected. Winning photographs will be returned on sooner than December 10, 2004.

After final selection, the winners will be notified and asked for a signed release to use the photo for the 2006 4-H calendar. Both the photographer and parent/guardian must sign the release. A second photo will also be requested to be kept at the National 4-H Council.

WIN UP TO $300 FOR YOUR OCTOBER 4-H PROMOTION CAMPAIGN

National 4-H Week is October 5-11, 2003. Has your county made plans for celebrating and promoting 4-H? 4-H promotion is a great way to launch the beginning of a new program year while highlighting school and community activities.

We want to recognize Tennessee counties for outstanding promotional efforts... not only during National 4-H Week, but during the entire month of October! Some county program will earn as much as $300 for their 4-H promotional campaign. This money can be applied toward any need the county might have.

How do you become eligible for this award? Simply post the 4-H promotional activities conducted in your county on the Web site at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/promo/ once they have been completed. Designate someone to be responsible for post each activity, taking care not to make duplicate entries. Activities may be conducted by individuals, clubs, project groups, Honor Club groups, All Star groups or Sigma Lambda Chi groups... to name a few. Just be sure your county is credited for the activity when the information is posted.

Judging will be based on the information posted to the Web site. Criteria will include the number of promotional activities conducted, number of people involved, number of contact hours spent, creativity, media use, etc. Awards will be presented to the counties with the best campaigns... $300 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third. Deadline for all entries to be posted is November 14, 2003.

National 4-H Week is a great way to market the wonderful things going on in your county
4-H program. If you need some quick ideas to get started, check out 101 Ways to Celebrate National 4-H Week from the state 4-H staff at www.utextension.utk.edu/promo/101ways.htm.
