POWER OF FIVE KIT PROVIDES SERVICE-LEARNING TOOLS
(Source: Clover Corner News - September 4, 2003)

Are you looking for ways to engage youth in service-learning, hands-on education or out-of-classroom activities? Then order a free Power of Five kit today. Created in partnership with Weekly Reader, this America's Promise resource was created to encourage young people ages 11 through 14 (tweens) to do their part in fulfilling the Five Promises for youth their age or younger.

An instructor's guide is provided in the kit for teachers or small group leaders facilitating the project. Tweens work on activity sheets that explain each of the Five Promises. Then they research ways they can transform the lessons into service project that benefit other tweens and children in their community. They dedicate five days to serving their school and community and reflect on their experiences.

The Power of Five is free of charge and is available in print or electronically. For a print copy, email poweroffive@americaspromise.org with your name, organization, address and number of kits needed. To download an electronic version of the file, visit www.poweroffive.org. After completing the project, please give us your feedback on the evaluation survey, which is also available on the Web site.

SEARCHING FOR THE NATION’S TOP YOUTH VOLUNTEERS

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), honor outstanding community service by young people in grades 5 through 12. Last year, the program drew more than 24,000 applications. Nearly 200 young people were nominated by county 4-H programs, and 90 of these were selected as State Honorees.

Every county office should have received application forms for The 2004 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in the past week. They also may be obtained at www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/awards/prudential.cfm, or by calling 888-450-9961.

Students must submit completed applications by October 31, 2003. Each county 4-H program can select one middle level Local Honoree for every 1,000 members (or portion thereof) in grades 5 through 8 and one high school Local Honoree for every 1,000 members in grades 9-12. Then, participating schools and local organizations will select and honor their top youth volunteers, and submit them for state-level judging by November 7.

The two State Honorees will be named in February 2004 and will receive $1,000 awards, engraved silver medallions, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, in May 2004 for four days of national recognition events. Runners-up at the state level will receive bronze medallions or Certificates of Excellence. The 10 National Honorees will receive additional awards of $5,000, gold medallions and crystal trophies for their schools or organizations. They also will have $25,000 worth of products donated in each of their names to needy children in their communities by Kids In Distressed Situations, Inc., the national charity of the children’s apparel and products industry.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, created in 1995, constitute the country’s largest youth recognition program based solely on community service, and have honored nearly 50,000 young volunteers at local, state and national levels over the past eight years. For more information, contact Dawn Kelly of Prudential Financial at (973) 802-7134 or visit www.prudential.com/spirit.

SERVICE-LEARNING GRANTS AVAILABLE FROM CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS FOUNDATION

Constitutional Rights Foundation’s Robinson Mini-grant Program honors the late Maurice Robinson, a longtime supporter of innovative education and effective citizenship education. Each year, CRF awards mini-grants for K-12 service-learning projects designed to address serious community issues.

Some of the projects fall under the category of poverty, hunger, environment, mentoring children and youth, crime and safety issues, and aging. Students will develop problem-solving skills and also learn citizenship skills by practicing them. The skills the students gain from doing these projects will not only help their community but also help them in their life as a citizen of a democratic society.

The maximum grant amount is $600. Proposals must be postmarked by October 17, 2003. Visit www.crf-usa.org/network/crf_robin.html for more information and application guidelines.
