FAMILY MATTERS: NATIONAL FAMILY VOLUNTEER
DAY
(Source: Points of Light Foundation)
National Family Volunteer Day is designed to showcase the benefits
of families working together, to introduce community service and
encourage those who haven’t yet made the commitment to volunteer
as a family. National Family Volunteer Day is held the Saturday
before Thanksgiving and kicks off National Family Week. To learn
more about National Family Week, November 23rd- 29th, please visit
www.nationalfamilyweek.org.
Volunteering as a family provides quality time, strengthens communication
and provides opportunities for family members to be role models,
while making significant contributions to their communities. This
year, communities around the country will be working with families,
4-H groups, corporations, non-profits and Volunteer Centers to make
family volunteering a national tradition.
For assistance in planning, implementing and promoting your National
Family Volunteer project, visit www.pointsoflight.org/organizations/nfvd.cfm
to download a National Family Volunteer Day guidebook!

HENRY COUNTY 4-H’ERS CELEBRATE SERVICE
Thirteen members of the Henry County 4-H Honor Club recently enjoyed
a celebration trip to St. Louis after winning the district All Star
Service Award at Roundup. 4-H S.O.S. awarded the Henry County Honor
Club $400.00 to plan a celebration trip of their choice. Members
chose to plan an overnight trip to St. Louis. While in St. Louis,
4-H members visited the St. Louis Arch and spent a day at Six Flags.
Time was also spent making plans for service projects for the coming
year and reflecting on previous service projects. A great time was
had by all. Three adult volunteer leaders, along with Extension
agent, Michele Atkins accompanied the group.

NEW ONLINE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE LEARNING
COURSE
(Source: Clover Corner News - September 10, 2003)
Community-Based Service Learning 101 is a new online course being
offered by Michigan State University Extension’s 4-H Youth
Development in partnership with the Michigan Community Service Commission
and Michigan’s Learn and Serve program. It is designed for
staff and volunteers who work with youth, ages 12 to 19. All nonprofit
organizations, recreation departments, schools, faith-based youth
groups, and community action agency youth groups are encouraged
to take advantage of this course.
Through weekly lessons, worksheets, message boarding, real time
chat sessions with guest experts in the fields of youth development
and service learning, this course will offer opportunities to learn
more about models that promote community-based service-learning,
find out how to apply the most current literature in this area,
develop a greater understanding of the concepts by applying them
to real-life situations, reflect on the link between community service
projects and positive youth development, and build on ways to sustain
and fund youth-driven community service projects.
The cost is $75 for this seven-week non-credit, certificate course
which starts September 18 and runs through October 30, 2003. A course
description, syllabus and registration are now available at www.msue.msu.edu/cyf/youth/commserv/cbsl101/.
For further information contact Beth Cheng, Extension Associate,

NOMINATIONS DUE FOR SOUTHERN REGION LEADER
FORUM PLANNING COMMITTEE
It is time again to appoint a new volunteer leader to the Southern
Region 4-H Leader Forum planning committee. Tennessee's representative
will be appointed to a four-year term, covering the 2004-2007 Southern
Region Leader Forums. This individual will have a very large task
in front of them as Tennessee will be in charge of coordinating
the workshops for the 2005 forum and coordinating the entire 2006
forum as the host state.
The requirements of this position include being present each year
at a late fall planning meeting in the state hosting the next year’s
leader forum. The committee member will also be required to participate
in a number of conference calls and MUST attend
the forum each year through 2007. Planning committee members are
also asked to arrive at the forum at least one day early to assist
in the setup of the event.
If you have a volunteer in your county that might be interested,
please write a letter of recommendation stating why you think that
leader should be a member of the planning committee. Forward
the letter to the area 4-H specialist in your district office by
September 17, 2003. Each district will select one representative
to send on to the state 4-H office where a committee will select
Tennessee's new planning committee member. Area specialists
should submit their nominee's letter of recommendation to the state
4-H office by September 22, 2003.
If you have questions regarding this process please contact me.
I look forward to seeing a large number of individuals being nominated!

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR NATIONAL 4-H WEEK?
National 4-H Week begins Sunday, October 5. Have you decided how
you will be celebrating? 4-H promotion is a great way to launch
a new programming year while highlighting school and community 4-H
activities.
We would like to share the good things you do for National 4-H
Week through the Tennessee 4-H Web site. We hope Extension agents,
volunteer leaders and 4-H members will let us know what is being
done in counties across the state by posting their activities to
the Web site at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/promo/.
Those doing so will be eligible for cash awards up to $300.
National 4-H Week is a great time to market the wonderful things
going on in your county. If you need some quick ideas to get started,
check out 101 Ways to Celebrate National 4-H Week at www.utextension.utk.edu/promo/101ways.htm.
