GEAR UP FOR LIFESMARTS!
LifeSmarts online competition will open Monday, September 22. In
Tennessee, it will run through December 31. Teams invited to state
competition will be notified shortly after the first of the year.
Twelve teams will be invited to the state contest this year. The
state contest is tentatively set for March 6 at a location near
the center of the state. The location will be announced at a later
date.
To register as a coach, log onto the LifeSmarts Web site at www.lifesmarts.org.
Also, check out the Tennessee LifeSmarts Web page by clicking on
the LifeSmarts link from the homepage at www.utextension.utk.edu/fcs/.
Currently, there are links to nutrition and food safety Web sites
from the Tennessee site that provide the most important and concise
information in those subject areas. We will be posting similar links
to the other subject areas by early October. I will be sending 4-H
Youth Development Agents directions for registering as a coach and
how to operate the online contest as an attachment to an e-mail
message. When you register as a coach, you will receive a free coach’s
guide and some promotional pamphlets.
Take advantage of the opportunity to involve lots of high school
youth in learning about becoming wise consumers. The information
they learn through LifeSmarts may help them to make wise financial
decisions and avoid debt or bankruptcy.

JUNIOR HIGH RECOGNITION OPPORTUNITY
Many counties do not take advantage of the Junior High Continuing
Service Award provided by the Tennessee 4-H Alumni, Inc. The award
is to recognize junior high 4-H members who have:
1) made significant contributions in the area if 4-H promotion.
2) shown leadership ability on an individual basis and with
an organized group.
3) participated in activities of value to their family and community.
4) shown consistent personal growth through participation in
4-H activities. |
Each county may recommend two members. In addition to these two
members, you may recommend one member for each 100, or major fraction
thereof, junior high 4-H members in your county. This number is
based on the junior high enrollment on July 1 of the current calendar
year. You should recommend your recipients to us on the Tennessee
Junior High 4-H Continuing Service Award Nomination Form available
from the state 4-H office or the 4-H forms page at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/forms&materials/.
Each recipient will receive a Tennessee Junior High Continuing
Service Award certificate. There is no cost to the county, and a
member can receive the award only one time.

STATE 4-H STAFF COMMITTED TO COUNTY PROGRAMMING
Those of us who work with 4-H and youth are very aware that there
is always more work than we can get done and we certainly do not
look for one more thing to do. However, the state 4-H staff... Steve,
Jill, Patrick, Lori Jean and I have a commitment to the 4-H program
in this state. We also feel strongly that our office serves as a
resource to 4-H agents, along with the area 4-H specialists.
As you know, the budget is tight and we are all short staffed.
However this is our notice to you that we will make visits to your
counties when possible to assist you in volunteerism, youth/adult
partnerships, youth leadership, sustaining service learning, planning
and organizing project groups, inschool clubs, school enrichment
groups, camping and all of those things encompassed in those clubs
and groups. We are available to come to banquets or special recognition
programs.
We ask that you notify us of your request for assistance or an
invitation to an event at least a month in advance. When asking
for assistance, please give us a couple of alternative dates if
possible.
Visiting county programs keeps us connected to you and to the youth.
We have a great 4-H program in Tennessee and we appreciate the effort
in positive youth development that you do every day.

TENNESSEE YOUTH/ADULT PARTNERSHIP TRAINING
TEAM
The state 4-H office is pleased to announce an opportunity for
25 youth, volunteer leaders and Extension agents (approximately
8 each) to serve on the Tennessee Youth-Adult Partnership Training
Team (TYAP).
This group will receive a free training curriculum from the National
4-H Council entitled “Youth-Adult Partnerships: A Training
Manual.” This training team will receive a free one-day train-the-trainer
seminar this fall that will enable them to train groups of individuals
at the local, district and state levels.
TYAP members will be responsible for going back into their county
and district programs and offering training in youth-adult partnerships
to Extension agents, volunteer leaders, and 4-H members. Reporting
the training outcomes and evaluation data to the state 4-H office
will also be requested from TYAP.
This opportunity is made possible through a grant from the National
4-H Council. The objectives of this grant include training over
1000 youth and adults to work together to solve community issues
by December 2004. If you or someone you know is interested in being
a part of TYAP, please contact Patrick Hamilton at the state 4-H
office at 865-974-2128 or via email at patrick@utk.edu.
