4-HCCS LITERATURE ORDERS ARE IN THE MAIL

Those counties ordering 4-HCCS curriculum for their computer, food-nutrition and sheep project groups can expect it to be arriving soon though U.S. mail (or county mail packet depending on the size of the order). Those counties placing orders included Blount, Campbell, Crockett, DeKalb, Franklin, Grainger, Greene, Henry, Lawrence, Loudon, Sullivan, Sumner, Tipton and Williamson. A complete set of literature was included for each project group member, plus a Helper’s Guide for the leader working with the group.

4-H REVIEW COMMITTEES ARE FUNCTIONING

I think most agents working in 4-H youth development are aware that there are committees meeting to review 4-H projects, 4-H events and 4-H record books. There are assumptions and rumors circulating about cutting events and changes in the projects and record books.

When we held the listening sessions and participated in discussions with volunteer leaders and 4-H'ers, we heard that we needed to make changes in our 4-H program. The purpose of the review committees is to study and review what we are currently doing and make recommendations for changes where needed.

The recommendations will be submitted to me by January 1, 2004. No decisions have been made regarding events, record books or projects. The recommendations will be considered and many people will be consulted before the final decisions are made. There will be no changes in record books prior to Roundup 2004. If there are changes in the record book process, we could not begin that process until after Roundup 2004.

We appreciate your input and your interest. If you have suggestions, please contact Lori Jean Mantooth, 4-H projects review committee chair; Neal Smith, 4-H events review committee chair; and Carmen Burgos, 4-H record books review committee chair.

BEDFORD COUNTY RETURNS FROM NATIONAL DAIRY JUDGING CONTEST

Bedford County participated in the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sept. 30. Team members included Paula Gambill, Erin Bartley, Jessica Fox and Sara Chick. The team was 22nd overall out of 31 teams. The team placed 11 in Ayrshire and 7th in Guernsey.

Highlights of the trip included judges practices at Hoard's Dairyman Farm and Barless Jersey Farm. The group also toured the Hoard's Dairyman Printing, National Dairy Shrine Museum and NASCO Supply Company, the Wisconsin State Capital and a GM Assembly Plant. Before arriving in Madison, the group toured the Sears Tower in Chicago.

The team was accompanied by their coach Gay Ervin and 4-H agent Dan Owen. Parents attending included Paul and Judy Gambill, Bobby and Lynne Fox and Lisa Chick. The Tennessee 4-H Dairy Endowment, along with local sponsors assisted with the travel expenses.

FINAL CALL FOR TYAP TRAINING TEAM

This is the final opportunity for agents, volunteers, and 4-H members to sign up to be a part of the Tennessee Youth-Adult Partnership Training Team (TYAP). This group will receive a free training curriculum from the National 4-H Council entitled “Youth-Adult Partnerships: A Training Manual.” This training team will also receive a free one-day train-the-trainer seminar later this year that will enable them to train groups of individuals at the local, district and state levels.

This opportunity is made possible through a grant from the National 4-H Council. The objectives of this grant include training over 1000 youth and adults to work together to solve community issues by December 2004. If you or someone you know is interested in being a part of TYAP, please contact Patrick Hamilton at the state 4-H office at 865-974-2128 or via email at patrick@utk.edu ASAP.

PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD
(Source: Clover Corner News - October 8, 2003)

The President's Volunteer Service Award is a Presidential recognition program for Americans of all ages who contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer service. The Award is given to individuals, families, and groups that have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and civic participation over the course of a 12-month period. The awards are delivered through a variety of local, state, and national organizations that are registered as "certifying organizations." By registering your organization, you will help the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation to recognize the outstanding volunteer service of individuals, families, and groups, and thereby encourage others to join the national volunteer service movement. To learn more about the President's Volunteer Service Award and to register as a certifying organization, please visit www.presidentialserviceawards.gov.

YOUTH LEADERS FOR LITERACY GRANTS
(Source: Clover Corner News - October 8, 2003)

Youth Leaders for Literacy is an initiative of the National Education Association (NEA) and Youth Service America (YSA) to help children and youth direct their enthusiasm and creativity into reading-related service projects. During the seven-week program period and beyond, the sponsors hope to create a groundswell of literacy service in communities across the country. The NEA and YSA encourage youth to begin a literacy service project on March 2 (Read Across America Day) and culminate and celebrate the project on April 16-18 (National Youth Service Day). Proposals for literacy service projects will be considered for a $500 grant. Grant applications, available at www.nea.org/readacross/volunteer/youthleaders.html, must be postmarked by December 1, 2003.
