2003 NATIONAL 4-H CONGRESS DELEGATION RETURNS FROM ATLANTA

Tennessee was well represented by the 40 delegates who attended the 82nd National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. A copy of our National 4-H Congress delegation booklet, Growing into the Future and the 2003 4-H Congressional Record: A Special Edition will be included in your county mail packet this week. Share these with your co-workers. They contain bios and pictures of each of the delegates along with highlights of the week at National 4-H Congress.

You are also invited to share in the delegates Congress experience through the web site at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/natcong/. There you will find the Tennessee delegation group photo in addition to online versions of the publications in your mail packet.

Please invite these young people to share their Congress experiences with you and with your 4-H members. Any of them would be excellent speakers for achievement banquets, Honor Club meetings, volunteer leader meetings, club meetings, etc. The names and addresses are included in the publication.

DELEGATES SELECT NATIONAL 4-H CONGRESS DESIGN TEAM NOMINEES

The Tennessee delegation had the opportunity to nominate three of its members to apply for the 2004 National 4-H Congress design team. The delegates kept a close eye on one another and on Sunday night voted for three of their number whom they felt had exhibited leadership skills to bring to this national planning group. The three finalists were announced at the Tennessee luncheon on Monday at the Ritz Carlton. Adam Hensley (Loudon County), Shanna Long (Hamblen County) and Jessica Ray (Trousdale County) will be putting together their resumes and video tapes for the national selection committee. We are proud of them and wish them the best in their bid to be a part of the planning team for next year's Congress.

EASTERN NATIONAL 4-H HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

Tennessee 4-H members from the three grand divisions of the state did an excellent job of representing Tennessee in all events at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Wilson County horse judging team did an outstanding job and was the reserve champion team. Members of the team were Beth Barnes, Allison Erkman, Rachel Pulley and Casey West. Casey West and Allison Erkman were first and second high individuals in halter. Allison Erkman was third high individual in oral reasons and fourth high individual overall. Rachel Pulley was fifth in oral reasons, sixth in performance and seventh overall. The team coach is Terry Young. (A photo of the Wilson County team is posted at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/ideas03/images/wchjteam.jpg.)

The team demonstration, individual demonstration and public speaking contests were very tightly contested. Jordan Rippy from Sumner County placed sixth in the public speaking; Amber and Emily Burkey from Sullivan County placed 10th in the team demonstration; and Molly Smith from McNairy County did a great job in the public speaking contest.

The horse bowl contest is always an exciting contest. The Knox County team did a great job in the contest. Team members were Reed Carringer, Rebekah Neal, Natalie Rich and Jamie Peterson. They were coached by Nathan Hilzinger, Reed Carringer and adult volunteer leader Patty Benton.

The state winning hippology team from Blount County did an outstanding job. Team members were Whitney Herron, Melanie Lafoy, Lindsay Little and Amy Snoderly. The team placed ninth overall and was coached by Kim Snoderly.

HUMPHREYS COUNTY REPRESENTS STATE IN NATIONAL MEATS CONTEST

Humphreys County meat judging team members had a great trip to Kansas to participate in the National Meat Contest at Kansas State University. Team members were Laura May, Tanner Gregory, Luke Wilson and Jeff Lindsey. The trip was a grand 4-H finale for the seniors before they graduate this spring. Three of the team members had been in meat judging since 7th grade and their goal had been to get to the national contest. When the fourth member of the team joined them in 11th grade, he helped them achieve the goal. Dr. Dwight Loveday's dedicated help over the years was also very important to them getting to the national event.

Judging teams are a wonderful opportunity for young people to learn to think, reason, analyze, communicate, develop critical thinking skills and to work as a team. The secret is not to let them know all that education is taking place while they are having fun. Kansas has never seemed to be as attractive for our meat teams as the National Western in Colorado. Times have changed! A five story indoor water park is part of the Great Wolf Lodge built in 2003 and is located in the Cabela Outfitters Store complex about one-half hour drive from Kansas City International Airport. The teens had a great time at the park! Slides are taken of these trips and are used to promote judging teams in local club meetings.

MAURY COUNTY DAIRY QUIZ BOWL TEAM

Maury County represented Tennessee in the National Dairy Quiz Bowl at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. November 8. Team members Eric Gardner, Will Baker, Casey Favors and Michael Parker made it to the fourth round before being eliminated.

Extension agent Dill Hughes shared the following report concerning the team.

“Two team members live and work on operating dairy farms, while the other two do not come from a dairy background. The boys gave a presentation about their trip to the county Farm Bureau board meeting, and the team member that was most removed from the farm gave a testimony that he had moved here from Nashville and knew nothing about farming or farm life. He stated that being able to work with this group and take these trips was the best thing he had ever done. How ‘bout that for 4-H impact!”

The Maury County team was one of 20 participating. They were accompanied by their coach Kathy Gardner and her husband Jerry. A photo of the team is posted at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/ideas03/images/quizbowl.jpg.

The National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl is one of the nation’s most challenging contests for dairy industry youth and attracts young people from throughout the United States. The contest gives young people an opportunity to test their knowledge of dairy cattle and dairy products.

NEW DATE AND LOCATION FOR STATE 4-H HORSE EVENTS

The state 4-H horse public speaking, individual demonstration and team demonstration events will have a new location and date in 2004. This change was recommended by the Tennessee 4-H Horse Advisory Committee. This committee is comprised of approximately 40 volunteers, industry leaders and Extension workers from across the state.

Although Tennessee participants have been extremely successful nationally, it was the feeling of the committee that much more participation would be possible if the events were separated from the state 4-H horse show. The new date, location, etc. for these activities are as follow:

Date: February 20, 2004
Location: Hyder-Burks Agricultural Pavilion, Tennessee Tech University
Starting Time: 6:00 p.m.

The event will be held prior to the State 4-H Horse Bowl and Hippology contests. Most felt our speeches and demonstrations would be a more compatible fit with the horse bowl and hippology contest participants compared to the horse show exhibitors.

General Information:

* The winner of the speech and individual demonstration contests receive a $500 unrestricted cash award and the team demonstration contest winners split a $500 cash award sponsored by Ft. Dodge Animal Health.
* A 4-H member may enter only ONE of the three events.
* Previous state winners are ineligible to compete in the event in which they won first place.
* Entries will be made at the district horse bowl and hippology contests.

Additional rules, score cards, etc. are located in the back of the Tennessee 4-H Horse Championships Handbook (orange booklet).

TENNESSEE 4-H’ERS ATTEND NATIONAL POULTRY AND EGG CONFERENCE

Twelve Tennessee 4-H members, parents, leaders and Extension personnel attended the National Poultry and Egg Conference, November 19-20, in Louisville, Kentucky. During the two-day event, contestants from across the U.S. participated in five areas of competition. Tennessee had contestants in four of these events.

Polk County represented Tennessee in the National 4-H Poultry Judging Contest. Team members were Tyler Brannon, Matthew Killian, Jarrod Soos and Ross Miller. The team was 7th in production hens/reasons; 9th after a tie breaker with Indiana in market poultry; 3rd after a tie breaker with Kansas in market eggs; and 7th overall. Tyler Brannon received a bronze pin and $50 savings bond as the 14th high individual in the contest.

Nicholas Lewis of Polk County received a gold pin and $300 savings bond for his 3rd place finish in turkey barbecue competition after a tie breaker for 2nd place with the contestant from Pennsylvania.

André Robinson of Hamilton County received a silver pin and $200 savings bond for his 4th place finish in chicken barbecue competition.

Fiona Black of Hardeman County participated in the egg preparation contest.

Congratulations are in order for these 4-H members, their agents, parents and leaders. A special thanks to Dr. Charles Goan, Extension poultry specialist for his efforts in conducting our state events and helping the contestants prepare for national competition.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY LIVESTOCK TEAM RETURNS FROM LOUISVILLE

The Williamson County 4-H livestock judging team represented Tennessee at the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest, November 17-19, at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. Team members Bryan Barnes, Sara Gossett, Mallorie Blankenship and Kayla Yates placed 25th in a field of 34 teams. The contest consisted of 10 classes of beef cattle, sheep and swine, with four sets of reasons and questions on two other classes.

The team had a great experience, having had the opportunity to judge some very high quality livestock. They found the livestock exhibits and trade show at the North American “awesome!” They were accompanied by their 4-H agent Larry Darnell and parent/volunteer leader Jeff Gossett.
