2004 4-H JUNE DAIRY MONTH POSTER CONTEST
The guidelines for the 2004 4-H June Dairy Month Poster Contest
can be found at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/ideas04/links/dairyposter04.htm.
Please note that your county winning poster should be sent to J.J.
Collins by May 7, 2004. Posters are not judged on a district level.
ADA of Tennessee will handle all judging. Also, please note that
the 4-H member submitting the winning poster will receive a $500
savings bond and the county office will receive a $100 cash award.
If your county has a Spiffy program, please share this information
with the person who gives leadership to that effort.

CIVICONNECTIONS: CONSTRUCTING THE PAST,
CREATING THE FUTURE
CiviConnections is a new program of the National Council for the
Social Studies funded by the Corporation for National and Community
Service. Grants of $7,500 will be awarded to 33 teams of 3 teachers
each (3rd through 12th grade, social studies teachers preferred)
in schools or school districts across the nation this June. Please
pass this message along to any 3rd through 12th grade social studies
teachers who would like funding to support projects that integrate
local historical inquiry around a chosen social issue with service-learning.

DATE SET FOR STATE LIVESTOCK/MEATS JUDGING
CONTESTS
The 2004 Tennessee 4-H livestock judging and meats judging contests
will be held June 1. The contests will be on the campus of Middle
Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. Additional information
will be available to participating teams at a later date.

GRANT OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAMS
Share Our Strength, one of the nation's leading anti-hunger organizations,
is re-opening the application process for funds raised via The Great
American Bake Sale. Grants will be made available in the following
states for this second round of applications: AK, AL, HI, KY, LA,
ME, NH, TN, UT, VA, and WV. The goal of the grantmaking program
is to increase the number of children participating in after-school
and summer nutrition programs that take advantage of the USDA reimbursement
or have a plan to take advantage of the USDA reimbursement. To this
end, Share Our Strength will fund organizations that are: 1) Current
or potential program sponsors (those who administer the programs)
or 2) Organizations who help improve and deliver these two programs.
The application deadline is February 6, 2004. For more information

NATIONAL 4-H PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
Do you have a state or county award-winning photo from 1999-2004?
Submit it to National 4-H Council’s annual 4-H photo contest
by March 1, 2004.
Thirteen photos will be selected for the 2006 4-H Calendar. Winning
photos will be displayed at the National 4-H Conference Center in
Chevy Chase, MD and on www.4-hmall.org
from September 2004 to December 2004 prior to being returned. They
will be gallery-mounted and framed. An engraved brass plate with
the photographer's name make this an impressive award.
Winners will be notified around May 2004 and are required to sign
(along with parent/guardian) a release to use the photo in the 2006
4-H Calendar. We will also request a second photo to display at
the National 4-H Conference Center. Winning photographs will be
returned no sooner than December 10, 2004. Submissions not selected
for the calendar will be returned by August 2004.
Submissions will only be considered for the 2006 4-H Calendar if
they include the following information and criteria:

Affiliation with 4-H. |

Complete return address (for both UPS delivery and USPS First
Class Mail). |

Telephone number with area code. |
| 5. |
List of county, state, 4-H, or other awards that submitted
photographs have received. |
| 6. |
A 25-word or less description of the photo from the photographer. |
| 7. |
Photo submissions should be 8"x 10", in color, and
in a horizontal format. Vertical shots will be accepted only
if they can be cropped to fit the horizontal format of the calendar. |

Please do not submit digital photos printed on a home printer,
color photocopies, or low resolution digital prints. The submitted
print must have been printed or developed at a photo processing
store. |

NATIONAL FAMILY VOLUNTEER AWARD NOMINATIONS
DUE MARCH 15
The 2004 National Family Volunteer Award recognizes businesses,
families, nonprofit agencies, and volunteer centers that have engaged
in outstanding family volunteering activities in 2003. The award
brochure, which includes background on the award, award criteria

STATE LIFESMARTS CONTEST SET
The State LifeSmarts Contest will be held Saturday, March 6, at
the Ward Agricultural Center in Lebanon. The following twelve teams
and coaches have been invited to participate in the contest:

Coaches have until February 6 to notify Denise Brandon, state LifeSmarts
contact, if they will be able to participate. If teams are unable
to participate, alternate teams will be invited based on their order
of finish in the online contest. All teams have worked with 4-H
agents in their counties to provide training and information to
participants. Congratulations to these teams and their coaches for
advancing to the state quiz bowl.

YOUNG PEOPLE INVITED TO SUBMIT IDEAS FOR
HELPING ADULTS QUIT SMOKING
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (www.tobaccofreekids.org)
and the Consumer Healthcare division of GlaxoSmithKline have announced
the "C.H.A.M.P.S.S. Help Parents Quit Smoking" Contest,
which will reward young people for their ideas on ways to help a
parent or adult loved one quit smoking. The contest, which is part
of a national campaign called C.H.A.M.P.S.S. (Children Helping And
Motivating Parents to Stop Smoking) invites youth ages 13-18 to
log on to the program's Web site and explain what they did or plan
to do to help their parent, or another adult smoker in their lives,
to quit smoking. Three contest finalists will receive $1,500 cash
scholarships, and from those finalists one grand-prize winner will
be selected to receive a $5,000 cash scholarship and a trip for
two to Washington, D.C., where he or she will be recognized at the
Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids 2004 Youth Advocates of the Year
Award Ceremonies. The application deadline is February 20, 2004.
