The 4-H Academic Conference bus schedules were emailed on May 13 to those counties having delegates. If you have delegates attending this event and failed to receive a schedule, please let us know.

LIMITED NUMBER OF VOLUNTEER SHIRTS AVAILABLE

Looking for an innovative way to recognize your 4-H volunteers? Why not tell them they are U.G.L.Y.? Unselfish, Giving, Loyal, and Young at heart…that is. There is a limited number of shirts available for purchase from the state 4-H office. The shirts are long sleeve, navy blue and cost $12.00 each. The only sizes remaining are L and XL. MACON COUNTY BOASTS LARGEST ACADEMIC CONFERENCE DELEGATION

Registration is in for Junior High 4-H Academic Conference, and Macon County’s 12 delegates makes it the largest group attending. The event will be held on the campus of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, June 15-18, 2004.

The top five counties for Academic Conference are as follows:

1. Macon County - 12 delegates
2. Pickett County - 9 delegates
3. (T) Putnam County - 6 delegates
3. (T) Sumner County - 6 delegates
5. (T) Knox County - 5 delegates
5. (T) Loudon County - 5 delegates
5. (T) Warren County - 5 delegates

Congratulations to these counties for their success in promoting this event and to all agents who made this educational opportunity available to their 4-H members.

If you would like to verify your county delegation, go to http://ext1.ag.utk.edu/4H/acdmRegist.nsf. You should be able to view the information, but will not be able to make changes. Please let me know if you see anything that needs to be corrected.

ROBERTSON COUNTY HAS MOST RECORD BOOKS

Congratulations to all 4-H agents who encouraged members to submit their project achievement records for state competition. Hancock and Williamson counties were the top counties in the state this year as far as number of records submitted. Others making the top five list this year include:

1. Robertson County - 19
2. Madison County - 18
3. Williamson County - 14
4. Hancock County - 13
5. (T) Coffee County - 11
5. (T) Hardeman County - 11
5. (T) Knox County - 11

The Central District led with 77 records submitted; Cumberland had 68; Western had 63; and Smoky Mountain had 57. 4-H agents, volunteer leaders and specialists will complete the judging of the records on May 26. We will try to announce the names of the finalists to the districts by June 7.

SUMMER CAMP RESOURCES ONLINE

The 4-H Centers and Camping page on the 4-H Web site has materials that will be helpful to you as you train your leaders and prepare for summer camp. Go to www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/centersandcamping/ and then click on Resources for Agents link. You will find the “Go for the Gold” project sessions for 2004, as well as the Survival Guide for Leaders. Other camping materials will be posted as they are changed to electronic format.

Camp Staff Training will be May 13-15 at the W.P. Ridley 4-H Center. The 4-H Center program assistants will notify all counties of details regarding their specific camp in the next couple of weeks.

The brochures promoting Target S.M.A.R.T. Campboree and Wildlife Conference are also available from the Web site. Refer any interested participants to them as you promote these opportunities to develop life skills.

TARGET S.M.A.R.T. AND WILDLIFE CONFERENCE C.A.’S

The following individuals have been selected as conference assistants for the Target S.M.A.R.T. Campboree and Junior High Wildlife Conference. WILSON COUNTY 4-H’ER SELECTED FOR 4HUSA WEB CREW

Jared Pickens from Wilson County is one of 15 members named by the National 4-H Council and the 4HUSA.ORG design selection committee as a member of the 4HUSA Web Crew. The Crew is being formed to redesign, supervise, manage and market the Web site - www.4husa.org - as a site exclusively for, by and about the young people of 4-H across the country.

Jared’s term of an assignment will be 12 months. Members of the Web Crew will conduct their assignment through virtual meetings and IM. The first face-to-face meeting will be scheduled for later this summer. The Web Crew will be supervised by David Henderson, senior vice president for strategic communications at National 4-H Council. Best of luck to Jared as he represents Tennessee in this endeavor.
