COFFEE COUNTY PLACES 3RD IN NATIONAL 4-H FORESTRY INVITATIONAL

Tennessee was well represented at the National 4-H Forestry Invitational by the Coffee County 4-H forestry judging team. The event was held at Jackson's Mill State 4-H Conference Center near Weston, West Virginia, July 25-29. The team included Daniel Sherrouse, Jeremy Mills, Zack Hunt and Daniel Anderson. The team was coached by county Extension director Dean Northcutt, volunteer leader Barry Rhoads of Rhoads and Associates Consulting Engineers and assistant coaches Josh Hunt and Will Rhoads from last year's 5th place team.

During the Invitational, members compete for overall team and individual awards in a written examination, tree identification, map and compass reading, compass and pacing, forest evaluation, insect identification, disease identification, and the Forestry Quiz Bowl. The team this year placed 3rd in the nation from a field of 17 teams with Jeremy Mills being the 10th high individual and Daniel Anderson being the 9th highest individual in the contest. The Coffee County team placed 2nd in the Forestry Quiz Bowl and had the highest score on the forest evaluation and recommendations part of the contest. Team members also competed in a crosscut saw contest, pulp wood tossing contest and a log rolling contest, all of which were forestry skill fun competitions.

Several stops were made along the way at national forests, and the group observed the longest arch bridge in the world over the New River Gorge. The national event is sponsored by International Paper Company Foundation. Additionally, the Tennessee team was supported by various forestry industries and individuals through the Tennessee 4-H Foundation, Inc.

ENROLLMENT REPORT DUE SOON/REVISED ENROLLMENT FORMS FOR 2004-05

All counties should be completing their annual reports in preparation for the August 16 4-H Enrollment Report deadline. The 4-H enrollment Web site has been updated and can be found at:

www.utextension.utk.edu/4h/blueribbon

There have been changes to the reporting process so it is critical to visit the Web site and use the updated forms. Beginning in 2004, all activity participation should be reported through the computer enrollment program. In addition to the computer generated report, three supplemental narratives should also be completed. The Web site provides guidelines for completing all sections of the report.

2005 enrollment forms can also be found on the enrollment Web site. These forms reflect the changes in race, ethnicity and project selection. Please use them for enrolling all youth in 2005.

Please contact your regional IT specialist if you have any problems with completing and generating your report. Contact Jill Martz if you have any questions about project codes, delivery methods or activity reporting.

PUTNAM COUNTY WILDLIFE TEAM PLACES 2ND IN VIRGINIA

The Tennessee state champion Putnam County 4-H wildlife judging team, consisting of Leah McDonald, Bailey Enochs, Isaac Haney and Kyle McDonald, earned 2nd place overall team honors at the National Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Invitational held on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, July 28 - August 1, 2004.

The Tennessee team was recognized as being rated seventh in the written rural wildlife management plan section of the competition. In this area of the contest, teams were asked to write a wildlife management plan for wood duck, bluebird, great horned owl and cottontail rabbit living in the Eastern Deciduous Forest of Virginia.

The Putnam County 4-H'ers were also recognized as ranking fifth in the written and drawn urban wildlife management plan section of the national contest. Teams were asked to develop an urban management plan for frogs, Eastern cottontail rabbit, Eastern bluebird, butterflies and house sparrows as well as draw a landscape design depicting their management plan.

Putnam County team members also captured several individual awards worth mentioning. Kyle McDonald was high individual in the contest earning enough points to place him high overall. His 7th place finish in foods combined with a 2nd high individual award in aerial photo interpretation and 3rd in management practices helped him win this honor. Leah McDonald finished close behind in 8th overall while she was 4th high individual in foods and second in management practices.

After competing in the individual events pertaining to wildlife foods, wildlife management practices and aerial photographs, as well as the team events of written rural plan and urban wildlife plan, the Putnam County team finished 2nd overall behind the host state of Virginia. In all, teams from 22 states traveled to Blacksburg to compete for the national title.

While at the event, teams were treated to tours of the Virginia Tech Campus, Jefferson National Forest and the local towns of Wythe, Christiansburg and Roanoke. Coaches and chaperones were also treated to tours of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Explore Park and AmRhein Winery. Saturday was set up as a fun day for the teams to enjoy bike rides, water sports, shopping, caving, tubing and vast variety of events before the banquet that night

Putnam County greatly appreciates the work that Dr. Craig Harper and Dr. Tom Hill do to be sure our teams are prepared for the national competition.

TOTE BAGS FOR PROJECT BOKONON

At the 4-H All Star luncheon on July 21, featured speaker Rosita Najmi gave 4-H’ers an opportunity to support a nonprofit agency by purchasing a green fabric tote bag. Rosita recently returned from Africa, where women from a small village make the bags. The proceeds go to support Project Bokonon, a nonprofit organization that provides a village hospital in Benin with input medical supplies, as well as service learning opportunities for Wake Forest University students.

The state 4-H office has several of the tote bags that were not sold at Roundup. The bags are green, but Rosita has other colors available. If you are interested in purchasing a hand-made tote bag for $12, please send a check made payable to the Tennessee
4-H Club Foundation, Inc., to the attention of Lori Jean Mantooth in the state 4-H office.
