OPPORTUNITY FOR EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS AND TRAINING IN FIRE SAFETY
Tennessee historically has one of the highest fire death rates
in the nation. Fire death victims are frequently our most vulnerable
citizens: the elderly and young children. Consequently, the State
Fire Marshall’s Office (SFMO) is training volunteer educators
across the state to help reduce fire death and injuries in Tennessee.
With the funding from a Department of Homeland Security fire grant,
the SFMO has developed a multimedia CD-Rom called Safe at Home.
Each disk will have four presentations and games in English and
Spanish. Each presentation targets a high risk demographic - children
under the age of 5, elementary age children, parents of young children
and the elderly. The disk will also include a training guide and
other information to make the program as simple as possible for
educators.
In March 2006, the SFMO will have free train-the trainer sessions
in each grand division to show attendees how the CD-Rom works and
share how the program can best be utilized in their communities.
Each county (4-H agents) will receive more specific information
about the sessions.
Fire prevention education is most effective at the local level.
With the help of volunteer educators, fire risks facing our clientele
can be minimized.
