ACADEMIC CONFERENCE AND ELECTRIC CAMP WEB SITES UPDATED
The Tennessee Junior High 4-H Academic Conference and 4-H Electric
Camp pages have been updated and reflect the information for 2006.
The URL for the Academic Conference site is 4h.tennessee.edu/acadconf/.
The Electric Camp site may be accessed through 4h.tennessee.edu/elecamp/.
These sites promote the events and contain information of interest
for potential participants... including who may attend, program
highlights, and what to bring. There are links from the sites to
the registration and application forms as well as the Activity
and Event Acceptance Form (F600A). Both sites also have guest books
for 4-H’ers to use in asking questions, leaving messages
for other delegates or reading what others have to say about the
events.
We hope these sites will be useful to you in promoting Academic
Conference and Electric Camp with your 4-H members. You should
be receiving registration materials from your regional office in
the coming months.

PARTICIPATION CHANGE FOR ELECTRIC CAMP
The 2006 4-H Electric Camp is scheduled for June 27-30. The camp
is for boys and girls enrolled in 4-H who are in the 6th and 7th
grades as of January 1, 2006. A change for this year is that Electric
Camp is for those 4-H’ers who have NOT previously
attended.
There will be no return participation. Members do not have to be
enrolled in the electric project to attend the camp.
Electric Camp is a fun-filled, rewarding adventure in electricity
held at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The camp will feature
learning centers staffed by electric utility professionals. Each
learning center will use hands-on activities that allow the 4-H
members to learn by doing. Previous electric camps have received
rave reviews from the 4-H members, leaders and Extension staff
that have attended.
The cost for the 2006 4-H Electric Camp will be $125. This fee
includes the cost of meals, lodging, field trips, insurance, programs,
etc. Transportation fees are covered by members of the Tennessee
Electric Cooperative Association.
Each region is eligible to send two adult volunteer leaders to
the camp. Leaders should have an interest in the electric project.
At least 12 camp assistants will also be selected to attend Electric
Camp in a leadership capacity. Camp assistants must be senior 4-H
members.
You will receive registration material from your regional office
in the near future. Additional information is available on the
Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/elecamp/.

A very successful 2006 State Market Hog was held at the Tennessee
Livestock Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
126 youth from 24 counties exhibited 347 market hogs. In addition
to showing individual and pen-of-three market hogs, there were
competitions in ultrasound carcass class, skillathon and premier

Market Hog Skillathon contest. Judge for the show was Dr. Tom Baas
of Iowa State University. The show was held in conjunction with

TROUSDALE COUNTY HELPS HURRICANE KATRINA 4-H’ERS
Trousdale County (the smallest county in Tennessee) was able to
help the Hurricane Katrina 4-H’ers by providing a "Gifts
from the Heart" workshop. The Trousdale County 4-H’ers
purchased green silicone bracelets with all proceeds going to fund
this project in Harrison County, Mississippi. Many of my 4-Hers
could not afford the bracelets at $4.00 each and just gave whatever
small change they had.
When all was said and done, $500 was raised
and forwarded it to the Mississippi
4-H’ers for this project. The project was
to teach the 4-H’ers how to make microwave soups, jams, jellies
and other products they could use at home. The Mississippi Extension
agent indicated many of the 4-H’ers were living in FEMA trailers
and only had small microwaves to prepare their family meals.
The Mississippi group created a Powerpoint presentation that Extension
agent Theresa Allen will be sharing with her 4-H’ers at their
February meetings. You can also view it at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas06/attach/Gifts_from_Heart.ppt.
