BRING “CRITTERS OF COMFORT” TO STATE 4-H CONGRESS

As delegates are chosen for the upcoming 2006 State 4-H Congress in April, the state service project is being announced. This year, delegates are asked to bring NEW stuffed animals to be donated to the Nashville Metro Police Department to help them when they respond to youth in times of crisis.

When children are lost, abused, removed from their families or in case of natural disaster, they are often brought to the station. This service project will allow officers to offer cuddly critters as a form of support and comfort to the children.

The Tennessee 4-H program is excited to be a part of youth helping youth in their community, and encourage every delegate to bring a “critter of comfort” for a child in need. For more information, please check out our Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/stcong/generalinfo/service.htm.

MIX-IT-UP WITH MARTHA WHITE

The Martha White Mix-It-Up activity guide information was sent via email last week. This activity is available to all regions and is sponsored by Martha White, Inc. The purpose is to have an activity to allow young 4-H'ers to have a fun baking experience without pressure of competition. Everyone receives a certificate.

The activity is appropriate for 4th and 5th graders, but can be adapted for use with older youth. Recipes were available in the email attachment. Consideration was given to nutrition when the recipes were developed. This is an opportunity for another activity to get youth into baking or cooking.

We appreciate Linda Carmen for developing the activity guide and Martha White, Inc. for sponsoring Mix-It-Up with Martha White. Please contact me if you have questions or need more information.

SEVIER COUNTY CONDUCTS “BOOKS FOR KATRINA KIDS” PROJECT

“Live At Five” - a local WBIR TV 10 news magazine show - was at the Sevier County Courthouse on February 14 for the final rally and gathering of books for the “Books For Katrina Kids” project Sevier County 4-H members have been working on. Sevier County 4-H partnered with Emily Hollingsworth, a junior at Gatlinburg Pitman High School, who developed the project to send children's books to the Gulf Coast. 4-H members, local schools, churches and business groups contributed more than 10,000 books with the majority coming from local 4-H members.

Emily and her dad will deliver the books to St. Bernard Parish Unified Schools in Chalmette, Louisiana, February 17-18. 4-H staff in Louisiana helped locate the drop off point. The books will be distributed in St. Bernard Parish through the school, in FEMA trailer villages and used in local libraries were appropriate. 4-H agents in St. Bernard Parish do afterschool programming at this school. Sevier County 4-H agent Glenn Turner had the privilege to deliver 1200 books on January 11. This is an area that had great devastation and will put the books to great use. You can see a few pictures in the photo gallery on the Sevier County Web site at sevier.tennessee.edu/.

The rally included Honor Club and All Star members packaging the final donations, an educational exhibit about the project, a Powerpoint presentation about the project, the opportunity for those attending to sign a giant card of hope for those affected by Katrina, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream give away and ChikFilA coupons. Several 4-H clubs made cards, signed posters and made greetings to send.

Congratulations to all Sevier County 4-H’ers on this successful service learning activity. This is certainly an excellent way to promote our 4-H programs and help those who are in need.
