2006 4-H YOUTH AND COMMUNITY ATV SAFETY GRANTS

Specialty Vehicle Institute of America is providing funding for the 2006 4-H Youth and Community ATV Safety Grants. The grants offers funding in amount of 1) up to $7,500 for new applicants and 2) up to $2,000 for the 2005 grant recipients for continuation grants. (2005 grant recipients may apply for a new grant if their focus is new and has a broader reach.)

This grant is open to 4-H/Extension groups in local communities, in counties and at the state level. This program provides opportunities for young people and adults to address critical literacy needs of youth and their families. Youth are empowered to lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation process with minimal mentorship from adults. Youth will learn how their leadership can result in community collaborations that amplify the impact of their project.

Grants are offered only to 4-H/Extension Programs in the United States and its territories. Anyone who is not part of 4-H is encourages to contact their local UT Extension office and become a project collaborator!

Information and the grant application can be found at www.atv-youth.org/grants.aspx on the bottom of the page under “2006 ATV Safety Grants.”

Completed applications are emailed as an attachment to the state 4-H office BEFORE the national deadline (April 17, 2006, 5:00 p.m. EST). We will then forward your grant application as an email attachment to the appropriate person at National 4-H Council. Applications must be received via email, as an attachment. Do not send hard copies.

If you have any questions, email Sheila Chaconas, schaconas@fourhcouncil.edu or call at 301-961-2858.

ARE YOUR CONGRESS DELEGATES ELIGIBLE TO RUN FOR OFFICE?

Tennessee 4-H Congress is fast approaching. Many of you are getting ready for your regional Congress readiness days. Your 4-H’ers may be thinking about running for an office. Here are some things they need to keep in mind.

1. All candidates must be official Congress delegates (attending as either a senator or representative). Only senators may run for Speaker of the Senate; only representatives may run for Speaker of the House. Any delegate (Senator or Representative) is eligible to run for Governor.
2. A member of the current state 4-H council cannot run for a Congress office and cannot resign his/her current council position in order to be eligible to run for a Congress office.
3. All candidates must be approved by the state 4-H office for membership in the Tennessee 4-H Honor Club by April 6, 2006. (To check and see if your delegates are Honor Club members go to 4h.tennessee.edu/foragents/index.htm and click on the Honor Club membership banner.)
4. A candidate must be enrolled in the 9th or 10th grade on January 1 of the current year.

For more details on election procedures, visit the Tennessee 4-H Congress Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/stcong/election/elerules.htm.
