4-H PERFORMING ARTS TROUPE SEEKING NEW
TALENT
LIVE auditions will be held Saturday,
April 8 from 10:30 a.m till 12:00 noon at the War Memorial Auditorium
in downtown Nashville. Application to schedule a live audition should
be received by March 31, 2006. Members unable to attend the live
auditions should send a video or DVD application postmarked by April
17, 2006.
We have a large group of seniors graduating from the troupe after
this year's Congress pageant. There is a need to attract applicants
diverse in gender, race and talent. We are looking for youth in
vocal, dance and technical skills. Counties have had success using
the troupe as a recruitment tool to get talented new 4-H members
active and involved in other parts of the 4-H program.
Twelfth graders may not apply since they will have graduated prior
to our summer workshop. Eight through eleventh graders may apply.
Applicants may apply online at 4hperformers.tennessee.edu/
or may download a flyer at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas06/attach/troupapp06.doc.
You may order a promotional DVD from the Central Region office
to promote this activity to your youth. Making contacts in your
high school music and drama departments would broaden the opportunity.

BEEF INDUSTRY SCHOLARSHIP CHALLENGE
The Georgia Junior Cattlemen’s Association is introducing
a contest and scholarship opportunity. The Beef Industry Scholarship
Challenge will be April 22, 2006, at the Animal and Dairy Science
Arena in Athens, Georgia. High school juniors and seniors from any
state in NCBA’s Region II (GA, AL, MS, LA, FL, NC, SC, and
TN) are invited to enter the competition. Ten teams will be accepted
in the competition, with preference given to Georgia residents.
Teams will consist of three members and can be juniors and/or seniors
in high school. Juniors may compete again as seniors unless they
are on the first place team. Team members do not need to be from
the same high school or county.
The Beef Industry Scholarship Challenge is a unique contest that
focuses on the student’s knowledge and skills in all areas
of beef production management. Teams will work through 10 challenging
stations in a 25-minute rotation. The 10 stations include handling
and health, nutrition, marketing, seedstock merchandising, keep-cull
replacement heifers, job interview, beef industry issues, reproduction,
beef management challenge and credit and finance.
Scholarships are as follows: 1st place team, $3000; 2nd, $2100;
3rd, $1500; 4th, $900; 5th, $750; 6th, $600; 7th, $450; 8th, $300;
9th, $200; 10th, $200. The entry fee is $200 per team for Georgia
residents and $250 per team for non-Georgia residents. The entry
fee includes two meals and a memento. All Georgia residents must
be members of GJCA.
You may download an entry form/informational brochure at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas06/attach/challenge.pdf.
Please note the entry deadline has been extended to March 15. For
more information, contact Julie Sims, Georgia Junior Cattlemen’s
Association, at 478-474-6560 or

EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE IN CONGRESS SERVICE PROJECT!
Juliana Robbins, a Lawrence County 4-H'er, is the teen leader for the 4-H sewing club in her county. Juliana reported that in the past, her club has made homemade teddy bears for persons affected by events such as the tsunami, recent hurricanes, etc. Inspired by this year’s Congress service project, Critters of Comfort, she and her club are going to make bears and send them to Nashville with their county delegation.
This is a GREAT example of youth leadership, community involvement and a creative way to get other 4-H members involved in the Congress experience. Please remember that ALL of your 4-H members and clubs can participate in the Congress service project! Homemade or store bought, it is our goal to have a HUGE MOUND of Critters of Comfort in the lobby of the Sheraton Nashville Downtown to show our support for our fellow community members.
WAY TO GO, JULIANA and the Lawrence County sewing club! We look forward to seeing everyone's Critters of Comfort at the 2006 Tennessee 4-H Congress. For more information about the service project, link up at 4h.tennessee.edu/stcong/generalinfo/service.htm.

MAKE IT AN HONOR TO BE IN HONOR
CLUB
Honor Club is the first step in Tennessee’s three-level recognition
program... Honor Club, All Stars and Vol State. Honor Club recognizes
members for participation. Membership does not involve being the
winner in any kind of competition. Members receive points just for
participating. Any 4-H’er qualifying with the minimum number
of points on the application can achieve Honor Club recognition.
How can you make it an honor to be in your county Honor Club? One
way to make Honor Club special is to stage an impressive induction
ceremony for all your new initiates. Recognize your initiates at
an appropriate time in front of their parents, peers, county officials
or others they view as important to them.
The Tennessee 4-H Honor Club Recognition Ceremony (EC750) is a
step-by-step guide to staging a candlelight Honor Club initiation
ceremony. The publication comes complete with a script, list of
materials needed and staging diagram. If you do not have a copy
in your office, it is available online from the “Forms &
Materials” page on the Tennessee 4-H Web site at 4htennessee.edu/forms&materials/.
The direct link is 4h.tennessee.edu/forms/acrobat/ec750.pdf.
Honor Club recognizes members for meeting a standard of excellence
and recognition is a strategy for helping young people become more
capable and confident. Through the acknowledgment, affirmation,
and positive reinforcement of members’ efforts, feeling of
competence and capability increase and participation continues.
An impressive initiation ceremony can be the first step in building
that competence and capability in your Honor Club members.

METH DESTROYS YOUTH LEADERSHIP
COUNCIL APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE
The Meth Destroys campaign is excited
to announce that online applications are now available for the Meth
Destroys Youth Leadership Council (YLC) at www.MethFreeTN.org.
Formed by the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference and
Governor Phil Bredesen, the YLC will connect high school students
from across Tennessee who want to raise awareness among their peers
and their communities about the destructive nature of meth.
The Council's efforts will be facilitated primarily through the
Meth Destroys campaign Web site (www.MethFreeTN.org),
where YLC members will be able to get ideas about how to spread
the campaign's message, post their own ideas, share success stories,
request campaign materials and learn more about the drug.
While there will be hundreds of YLC members, only 200 will be selected
to represent their areas of the state at the Meth Destroys Youth
Leadership Summit in Nashville on April 25.
At the Summit, Council representatives will meet with one another
and district attorneys to discuss what can be done to stop the meth
epidemic, get a chance to meet Governor Bredesen, tour the Capitol,
hear stories from recovering meth addicts and participate in a training
session to develop and implement action plans in their communities.
Because of the Summit's statewide nature, limited space is available
to students from each area of the state. YLC members will be notified
if they are invited to participate in the Summit. In
order to be considered to represent their areas of the state at
the Summit, high school students should apply for the YLC by Friday,
March 24.
High school students can apply to become members of the Meth
Destroys Youth Leadership Council at the campaign's
Web site: www.MethFreeTN.org.
