Shipment of Products
Orders that ONLY include reprints and not any of the new/revised products will be shipped in August. If everything on an order is in stock it will be shipped immediately. Orders that include any of the new/revised 2006 products (including orders for complete sets and new/revised sets) will be shipped in September and October. Two order forms are available online. The later shipping date for new/revised products is due to the new national jury review procedure.

The policy of 4-HCCS is to only ship pre-press products when all items in a single order are available to be shipped. Therefore, if you need everything except the new/revised products earlier just place a separate order.

Preview Copies
Click on the 4-HCCS home page on “2006 Products” to view pilot copies for most of the new/revised products. These are not print-ready, but will give you an idea what the final products will be.

If you have ordering questions contact Erik Bremer at the Distribution Center (1-800-876-8636 or breme005@umn.edu). Remember: These are once-a-year discounts so be sure to order during April!

JACKSON COUNTY WINS STATE LIFESMARTS COMPETITION... AGAIN!

For the second year in a row, the “Smart Ladies” outwitted, outplayed and outlasted their opponents to become the state LifeSmarts champions March 4 at a competition held in Lebanon. However, they had some new team members this go around. The team will represent Tennessee at the National Consumers League’s national LifeSmarts competition in Philadelphia, April 22-25 of this year. The Smart Ladies consist of Jessica Anderson, Katie Garland, Shalane Hawkins, Heather King and Rayn Kriebel. They are coached by Cynthia Zeitz.

Close behind in second place was the team from Marion County coached by Vicki Lofty. Their team members are Rebecca Lofty, Summer Cheaves, Wesley Brewer, Braden Brown and Chelsea Black. Way to go Marion County! Third, but not least, was the team from Davidson County “Sigma Lambda Chi” coached enthusiastically by Justin Crowe. His proud members are Renee Martin, David Ruggles, Megan Liles Tiffany Graziano and Derek Carpenter.

LifeSmarts is considered the ultimate consumer challenge and is open to all teens in grades nine through 12. The "quiz bowl"competition focuses on knowledge in five key consumer areas: personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology and consumer rights and responsibilities. LifeSmarts is an educational opportunity that develops consumer and marketplace knowledge and skills in a fun, game show-style competition. To qualify for the state competition teams competed online. Twenty-three teams out of 37 from 11 counties qualified for the state competition. The top 12 teams actually made it to Lebanon to compete. Over 175 youth participated and Tipton County had the most players with 23.

LifeSmarts competitors gain more than information and knowledge. They develop self-confidence and teamwork, communication and leadership skills. LifeSmarts helps them become better decision makers and savvy consumers. Students not only win in a competition, they gain the skills to win in life.

The “Smart Ladies” now must raise more than $2,500 for their trip to the national competition. Helping the “Smart Ladies” go to the national LifeSmarts competition helps to ensure the future success of our students becoming smart consumers.

If you wish to make a donation to the LifeSmarts program, please make your check to the Tennessee 4-H Foundation, Inc, Attn: Mark Gateley, 205 Morgan Hall, 2621 Morgan Circle, Knoxville, TN 37996-4510 and make sure to indicate on the description line that this is designated for LifeSmarts.

Questions can be directed to Matt Devereaux, Tennessee LifeSmarts Coordinator at (865) 974-7193 or mdevereaux@utk.edu.

LINCOLN COUNTY 4-H’ER QUOTED IN NATIONAL 4-H COUNCIL PUBLICATION

Lincoln County 4-H’er Shamee Hurd was quoted in the National 4-H Council's 4-H Media and Marketing Communication Resources 4-H Success Stories for 2006. This article was about camps across the United States and lists the Tennessee 4-H Electric Camp. An excerpt from the article follows:

Shamee Hurd, 14, gets a charge out of learning about safety at 4-H Electric Camp. “I’m more aware of my surrounding as a result of 4-H Electric Camp. I learned to stay away from electric lines when they fall on the ground. I do very well in school studying science, especially when we study electricity,” she said.

The camp, held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, features learning centers and hands-on activities staffed by electric utility professionals. Campers make magnetic motors and discover how electric golf carts work while they learn about safety.

4-H Electric Camp is scheduled for June 27-30, 2006 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The cost is $125. For more information, visit 4h.tennessee.edu/eleccamp/.
