ENCOURAGE CONGRESS DELEGATES TO TAKE THE “NEXT STEPS”
Nearly 350 young people attended Tennessee 4-H Congress this week. They experienced civic engagement as they learned about state government, elected new Congress officers, participated in a service project and took part in other Congress activities. Now that they have returned home, work with Congress delegates to help them take the next steps.
“Next Steps: Moving Toward Civic Engagement” is a publication designed to help Congress delegates become more engaged citizens. The booklet contains ideas for civic activities, as well as links to dozens of Web sites about youth service, state and federal government, youth in governance and other civic-related topics.
Each Congress participant received a copy of “Next Steps,” along with a commitment sheet to help them plan and later report on how they are civically engaged at the local level. You can download a copy at 4h.tennessee.edu/civic/resources.htm.

HENRY COUNTY LEADS STATE IN HONOR CLUB INITIATES
Henry County is currently the top county in the state in terms of number of Honor Club initiates for 2006. As of March 31, they had 35 new Honor Club members approved for membership. Henry County was second with 33 initiates; Knox County was third with 17; Bedford County fourth with 14; and Madison County fifth with 9. Western is the top region with 64 initiates.
We are convinced there is a positive correlation between the number of Honor Club members a county can qualify and the quality of the 4-H program in the county. Honor Club membership is based on participation. Unless many participation opportunities are made available, not many 4-H’ers will be able to qualify for Honor Club recognition. Go to 4h.tennessee.edu/honorclub/howmany.htm for a complete listing of Honor Club initiates by region and county for January, February and March of this year.
