IT’S IN YOUR HANDS: ANIMAL EXHIBITS AND PUBLIC HEALTH
Join Washington State University on Thursday, May 18 at 9:30-10:30 a.m (Pacific Daylight Time) for the Extension Engaged : Its in Your Hands: Animal Exhibits and Public Safety. We all know petting zoos, agricultural fairs and farm tours provide wonderful opportunities for the public to learn about animals and agriculture. However, lack of understanding of disease transmission can lead to illness among visitors, especially children, when visitors are exposed to animal exhibit settings. In 1999 and 2000 over 25 human disease outbreaks were associated with visitors to animal exhibits. Although eliminating all risk from animal contact might not be achievable, this broadcast provides standardized recommendations for minimizing disease risks.
In this program, viewers will be introduced to the reality of disease outbreak risks associated with animal exhibits, the pathogens of greatest concern and recent research about hand washing and observation of fair goers and will be provided a toolkit for organizing public animal exhibits.
Guests include:
- Zena Edwards, Food Safety & Nutrition Faculty for WSU Thurston County
Extension
- Margaret Davis, Washington State University, Department of Veterinary
Microbiology and Pathology
- Jerry Newman, 4-H Youth Specialist
- Pat BoyEs, WSU 4-H Youth Development Program Director |

OMK CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS
Camp scholarships are back! Twenty-seven camp scholarships will be awarded to 4th-6th grade students with at least one parent currently deployed with any branch of the military, including active National Guard and Reservists. Each region will receive nine scholarships to cover the full camp fee and additional transportation fees charged by the counties.
To apply, youth should complete the OMK 4-H Camp Scholarship Application and submit their application to the county 4-H agent. We will promote this opportunity through 4-H and our OMK partner organizations; however, applications must come through the county Extension office. County offices should forward applications to the state 4-H office, where they will be distributed to the State OMK Team for review. Applications are due in the state 4-H office by May 8, 2006.
Counties will be notified of scholarship recipients by May 15. Scholarship payment information will also be distributed at this time.
Applications can be downloaded from the OMK Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/OMK/camp.htm.

OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNIZE VOLUNTEERS AND 4-H FAMILIES
Volunteers are at the heart of 4-H programs. We have two opportunities to convey our appreciation and recognize their efforts and impact on youth and our programming efforts. The awards will be presented at Roundup. Please read the following and determine if you have deserving nominees in your county.
State Adult Leader Recognition
This program gives recognition to an outstanding volunteer leader who has served five or more years. Each county may submit one nominee to the region. Each region will select two nominees for state competition. County winners will receive a Charline Hamilton Powell Leader Recognition certificate and the state winner an engraved plaque. Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kant of Blount County sponsor this recognition. The state winner will receive a trip to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. The application form may be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/.
W.M. & Ruth Hale Master 4-H Family Recognition
The Hale Master 4-H Families receive a framed certificate at the county level, engraved plaques at the regional level and a framed Tennessee Master 4-H Family medallion at the state level. The state awards are presented at State 4-H Roundup. Each county may recognize one family annually, plus one additional family for every 100 volunteer leaders. The Hale Master Family nomination form is available at 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/. |
Nomination forms are due in the state 4-H office on Thursday, June 1, 2006. Check with your regional office for regional deadlines.
