4-H SHEEP CONFERENCE: NEW DATE/NEW FORMAT
We’re going to try something a little different this year. Thanks to lots of good suggestions, we are going to a later date (Saturday, June 10) and are going to have the conference in one day (saves time and money for families). The new format allows for more teen leadership and “hands-on” experiences. Therefore, participants are encouraged to bring a washed lamb to use in their enhanced “hands-on” learning activities.
Important - we need a count! We just need: name(s) of those attending in your group and years of sheep project experience for each 4-H member. Call Warren Gill or Ramona Robertson (615-832-8341) or email them (wgill@utk.edu or redward4@utk.edu); or Ben Powell (615-237-0300/benthomaspowell@gmail.com) or Dwight Loveday (865-974-7344/hloveday@utk.edu). Cost for the conference is $10 per person payable when you arrive. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the program should be completed by 5:30 pm. Program details can be found on the 4-H Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/sheepconf/.
Teen leaders are needed for 4-H Sheep Conference. Teen leaders will have the opportunity to have a more active teaching role in the 2006 4-H Sheep Conference. Teen leaders will need to be willing to teach skillathon stations, grooming and showmanship and to bring a lamb and equipment for teaching. Teen leaders must be nominated by June 5 by a county 4-H agent or Tennessee Sheep Producer Association member. Send nominations to Warren Gill, Ben Powell or Dwight Loveday.
4-H agents and/or volunteers are needed to work with Dwight Loveday to develop skillathon stations (2-4 learning activities per topic) and serve as resource person for that station. In addition to the skilathon activity, a teaching guide for the teen leaders is needed. Teen leaders will use materials to “teach” learning activity topics. Contact Dwight if you are interested.
Location: Cumberland County Fairgrounds: located at 1398 Livingston Road. Exit
I-40 at the Jamestown/Crossville (Exit 317, Highway 127) exit. Go approximately 2 miles south toward Crossville and look for sign directing to Cumberland County Fairgrounds (Industrial). Turn right, go about 100 yards and turn right again and you will see the fairgrounds.

EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITY WITH MINNESOTA
I recently received this request from Houston County, Minnesota. They are looking for a 4-H group to exchange with in 2007/2008.
My name is Kelly Vortherms, I work with the 4-H program in Houston County located in Caledonia, Minnesota. I am looking for a 4-H group to exchange with in 2007/2008. My group of kids would be looking to do an exchange during 2007/2008 with a preference to travel in 2007. This June we are hosting a group from Virginia and are very excited. We would probably have anywhere between 10-15 kids interested in the exchange, but I won't know for sure until July. Here is a little bit about our area and some of the things we may do in an exchange.
We’re located in beautiful southeastern Minnesota, right in the heart of Bluff Country. We’re right on the Mississippi River close to La Crosse, Wisconsin and only a few miles away from Iowa. We’ll take trips down the river, show you the wonders of southeastern Minnesota and plan a day at the Mall of America! Some of our other activities may include going to a cave, Amish tours, a baseball game, touring some different farms, buffalo, elk and dairy, along with learning about Houston County's 4-H program. |
If any one would be interested in the possibility of being in an exchange with Houston County, Minnesota, please contact Kelly Votherms using the information below.

METH DESTROYS YOUTH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL SUMMIT UPDATE
Tyler Boyd, outgoing 2005 Congress Governor, and Jamie Lockhart, current State Council President, participated in the Meth Destroys Youth Leadership Summit in Nashville on April 25.
At the Summit, students from across Tennessee met with their district attorneys to discuss what can be done to stop the meth epidemic in our state. Governor Phil Bredesen addressed the teens and participants also had the opportunity to tour the Capitol, hear stories from recovering meth addicts and participated in a training session to develop and implement action plans in their own schools and communities.
Formed by the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference and Governor Bredesen, the Meth Destroys campaign is designed to raise awareness among Tennesseans about the destructive nature of meth in their communities.
For more information about the Youth Summit or to download PSA's, teacher guides or educational brochures and/or posters, please visit the Web site at www.MethFreeTN.org.

TENNESSEE TO HOST 2006 SOUTHERN REGION 4-H VOLUNTEER LEADER FORUM!
Mark October 5-8 on your calendar for the 2006 Southern Region 4-H Volunteer Leader Forum (SRLF). We have plenty to do, and I’m confident Tennessee is up for the challenge. Information will be sent out through email and our Tennessee Ideas newsletter.
We will need help with events and workshops/funshops (especially funshops). Kentucky will host the workshops, and we have a small window of opportunity to submit proposals.
The Request for Proposals for workshops and funshops for the 2006 SRLF is available on our Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas06/attach/SRLFWorkshopRFP.doc. However, we only have until May 12 to submit! Because of the short time frame, we are asking they be sent electronically to Stephanie Blevins in Kentucky. Her email is sblevins@uky.edu.
I will be sending an email to all agents showing additional areas we will need assistance.
Begin promoting the 2006 SRLF now! If you have questions, need additional information or would like to take leadership for one of the committees, please feel free to contact me at 865-974-2128 or via email at cburgos@tennessee.edu.

WARREN COUNTY WELCOMES 25 NEW HONOR CLUB MEMBERS
Warren County had 25 Honor Club applications approved in April. Congratulations to 4-H agents Jamie Harris and Michael Barry on making opportunities available that would enable such a large number of applicants to be accepted.
Remember Honor Club is a recognition program. Honor Club recognizes members for participation in educational opportunities; membership does not involve winning any kind of competition. Members receive points on the application form just for participating. Any 4-H’er meeting a minimum number of points can achieve Honor Club recognition. An active Honor Club is an indication of a quality teen program.
