CAMPBELL COUNTY 4-H’ERS RECOGNIZED BY COSMOGIRL!

A Campbell County 4-H group has won top honors in the CosmoGIRL! Cup with their Art From the Heart project. Sarah Boggess, Courtney Holder, Karah Longmire, Johnna Kitts, Travis Meredith, Marianna Wooden, Jessica Phillips and Marianna Paul along with team leader Kristin Holder took home the cup and a $10,000 prize from BONNEBELL. The contest, cofounded by Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos and CosmoGIRL!, inspired hundreds of youth to state community service projects.

For the past two years, Art From the Heart has held a special place in the hearts of abused and neglected children. The nine member team has made a positive impact in the lives of children creating an escape in their own community. The team planned weekly afternoon art activities for kids including painting, paper art, puppet-making and creating scrapbooks. Art From the Heart served as a safe haven for children, allowing them to release their fears, make new friends and have fun. The project also made a positive impact in the lives of children, inspired those around them and helped raise community awareness of domestic violence in their community.

Here are some quotes from the Campbell County 4-H’ers appearing in the August 2006 edition of CosmoGIRL!

Kristin, 17: Every year my friend and I decorate the Children’s Center, a haven for abused children, for Christmas, but we wanted to do more. We thought art would be fun and therapeutic, so we started weekly workshops at the center for kids ages 4-12. We each bring in different projects, like making paper dolls or painting. About five to nine kids come and we help them with the project of their choice. One day a girl told me, “Art helps me not think about things at home.” I feel so lucky just to help her. We hope to reach more kids by offering a summer day camp. We’d like to finish fixing up the abandoned greenhouse behind the center so we have room for the kids to come and benefit from the workshops.

Courtney, 18: Working with the kids makes me realize how fortunate I am I don’t let stuff get me down anymore - I see how happy they are. Like this
9-year-old who didn’t talk at all when she first started taking classes. Now she’s chatting with everyone!

Travis, 17: One girl who’s in preschool comes with her older brother and sister. She always says, “Let’s put our pictures together so we can stay together.” She’s so sweet. I don’t know anything about their home lives. I just want to help them focus on the positive.

Congratulations to this group of 4-H’ers. They are certainly very deserving of this honor and have represented their community and 4-H well.

ENROLLMENT REPORT DUE AUGUST 15

All counties should be completing their annual reports in preparation for the August 15 4-H enrollment report deadline. A packet with hard copies was sent to the counties via U.S. mail. Also, the 4-H enrollment Web site has been updated and can be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/blueribbon/.

Do NOT roll-over your county data until we give notification. When you send us the disk, we will check the files and make sure they are not corrupted. If you roll-over before we give notification you run the risk of losing your data!

There are no changes to the reporting process this year. Visit the Web site for further directions. In addition to the computer generated report, please complete the three supplemental narratives sent in the mail. These supplements are not new, they were requested last year. The Web site provides guidelines for completing all sections of the report.

There are minor changes on the enrollment forms for 2006-2007, mainly requesting information for OMK (Operation Military Kids) purposes. Please use these new forms, especially if you have youth that could participate in the OMK program.

Please contact your regional IT specialist if you have any problems with completing and generating your report. Contact Carmen Burgos if you have any questions about project codes, delivery methods or activity reporting.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society. The optimist invents the airplane and the pessimist the parachute.
