MEET THE NEWEST MEMBERS OF THE STATE 4-H STAFF

We have had several new additions to the state 4-H staff recently. We want to welcome them to the state 4-H office and will introduce you to them over the next few weeks. We will start with our newest member, Daniel Sarver.

Daniel started as an Extension 4-H specialist on July 1. His responsibilities will include the 4-H camping program; 4-H Target S.M.A.R.T.; and 4-H science, engineering and technology (SET) as well as other programming.

Daniel’s roots lie in agriculture, having grown up on a rice, soybean and crawfish farm in rural Acadia Parish in Southwest Louisiana. Daniel’s accomplishments as a youth include serving as president of his local FFA chapter and competing in the International Land, Pasture and Range Judging Contest as a state winner.

Daniel graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a B.S. in agriculture and later received an M.S. in vocational education from LSU. He started his career as an Assistant County Agent doing 4-H work in Lafayette Parish in 1990. Daniel worked in Lafayette Parish doing 4-H work for over 12 years. His 4-Hers were known for accomplishments in swine, horticulture, forestry, wildlife, plant science, dog care, conservation and sheep, to name a few. After his tenure as 4-H agent, Daniel worked two years in fund development at the University of Louisiana.

Daniel is married to Paula and has two sons, Stephen, 13, and Jacob, 10. They enjoy camping, bicycling and sports of all types. They have camped at parks in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Colorado and very soon Tennessee.

For contact information on Daniel and other members of the Tennessee state 4-H staff, go to 4h.tennessee.edu/staff/.

This is a great opportunity for 4-H members enrolled in the public speaking project or for any 4-H member with an interest in developing workforce skills. We will select four finalists to represent our state in the junior division and three finalists in the senior division for the Agribusiness/4-H Public Speaking Contest. Three finalists who are senior 4-H members will be selected for the Career Pursuit activity. Each contest offers a $300 first place award, $200 second place award and a $100 third place award. Last year Tennessee 4-H’ers won six of the nine awards offered in these events. Please encourage your 4-H members who are interested.

ROUNDUP DELEGATES “FLOOD THE CITY”

Everyone attending Roundup had an afternoon of good, clean fun for a great cause. All delegates, agents and volunteer leaders went to nine sites in Martin and hosted carwashes. These “donations only” carwashes helped raise $825 for We Care Ministries, Inc. of Weakley County. This organization supports Weakley County and the surrounding communities. They offer programs such as Meals on Wheels and provide school supplies, clothing, educational assistance, etc. for those in need. We appreciate everyone’s hard work in raising money for this worthy cause! For photos taken by Mandy Drewry at the Obion County Tennessee Farmers Co-op site go to:

STATE 4-H ALL STAR CONFERENCE HELD AT MARTIN

The 2006 4-H Roundup and All Star Conference provided several opportunities for All Stars to fulfill the organization’s motto of Service, as well as to be recognized for their contributions to their community over the past year.

After arriving at the UT campus, Roundup delegates turned in 1300 boxes of crayons and coloring books they had collected in their community as a part of the Color Your Community project. Through this project, crayons and coloring books were collected. These items were donated to the Weakley County Board of Education for distribution to the youth of Weakley County.

This year’s All Star Campfire was held on the UT Martin campus. The program had a few changes this year. Everyone who was inducted into All Stars over the past year was recognized. We were also treated to several songs performed by Dr. Jim Byford, Dean, UTM College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. An initiation ceremony was held, and the 2006-2007 All Star officers were tapped into service. They are:

State Chief - Kristen Holder, Campbell County
