BE SURE TO USE REVISED ENROLLMENT FORMS THIS FALL

The 4-H enrollment forms have been updated for the 2006-07 school year. A new section has been added for the 4-H’ers to disclose if their parent is a member of the National Guard, Reserve or other branch of the military. This information is optional and will be used to identify those youth who qualify for the Operation: Military Kids program. The clothing and textiles project has also been added to the 5-12th grade enrollment form to reflect the addition of this project. The enrollment forms can be found on the Forms and Materials page of the Tennessee 4-H Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/. Look in the upper left corner to make sure you have the correct form (revised June 2006).

COFFEE COUNTY WILDLIFE TEAM PLACES 3RD IN NATIONAL WHEP INVITATIONAL

The 2006 4-H National WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program) Invitational was held July 26-30, at Upham Woods 4-H Center in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The Tennessee state champion Coffee County 4-H wildlife judging team consisting of Jeremy Mills, Jonathan Mills, Pierce Morrison and Will Rhoads was awarded third place overall team at the contest. The team was coached by 4-H volunteer leader Sara Steelman, Coffee County Soil Conservation Service technician. The team was accompanied on the trip by Sara Steelman and Barry Rhoads, 4-H volunteer leader.

The other teams that competed in the contest were from Alabama, Kansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, Missouri, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Wisconsin, Idaho, Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

On Friday the competition began with wildlife management practices, followed by the rural and urban plan. In the afternoon contestants participated in wildlife foods, aerial photographs and oral reasons. While this was the agenda for the teams, the coaches went on a tour of the Wisconsin State Capitol, The International Crane Foundation, and the Aldo Leopold cabin.

The following day the teams were given the opportunity to go to a water park, go on a canoe trip, go sailing or take part in hiking/archery activities while scoring was being completed. Later that evening, the awards banquet was held. The top three teams were Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. In addition to the Coffee County team receiving the third place overall national ranking, they placed second with their rural plan and third in urban plan. The team members also received individual recognition. Jonathan Mills was recognized as the seventh high individual in aerial photographs. Jeremy Mills was recognized as ninth high individual in aerial photographs and oral reasons, sixth high individual in wildlife habitat management practices and fourth place high individual in foods. Jeremy was also recognized as the fourth high individual in the overall contest.

Other than the unusually hot temperatures in Wisconsin for this time of year and no air conditioning in the cabins, we had a great trip and a fun week!

DICKSON COUNTY PLACES 5TH IN NATIONAL 4-H FORESTRY INVITATIONAL

Dickson County’s 4-H forestry judging team represented Tennessee at the 27th annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational held at West Virginia University Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston, July 23-27. The team included Holly Wolfe, Gus Huerta, Francis Sander, and Martin Sander and was coached by Dickson County 4-H volunteer Theresa Sander. They were accompanied by volunteer leaders, Fritz and Mary Lou Sander along with Timmy Mann, former Dickson County Extension 4-H agent.

Events included a forestry written exam, tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic map use, the Forestry Bowl and forest evaluation. The team placed 5th out of 15 teams in the national contest. Martin Sander was the 4th high individual scorer.

Team members reported that the trip to the national invitational was an ‘awesome’ experience! They enjoyed meeting 4-H’ers from other states and became especially close to members of the Oregon team.

The national event was sponsored by The International Paper Company Foundation. The Tennessee team received additional support from various organizations, businesses and individuals who support the forestry project through the Tennessee 4-H Foundation.

Sincere appreciation is extended to Larry Tankersley, Extension forestry specialist, and Dean Northcutt, Coffee County Extension director, for their assistance in preparing our 4-H’ers for the national event.
