2007 MOUNTAINEER CAMPING INSTITUTE

An opportunity to learn and/or teach others about the camping experience is available to 4-H professionals. The 2007 Mountaineer Camping Institute is scheduled for March 13-15 at WVU Jackson's Mill State 4-H Camp, near Weston, West Virginia. Not only is this an open invitation for you to attend to learn more and cultivate your interest in youth camping, but it is also a formal call for presentations for the conference. Bill Beckley, 4-H camping specialist in West Virginia, is the contact person.

Attached are materials you need to submit a workshop proposal. They include a cover letter, a form which may be completed and mailed via email and an alternative form to print off and complete by hand if you prefer to mail or fax your submission.

* Cover letter - 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas06/attach/letter.pdf
* Email form - 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas06/attach/emailform.doc
* Fax/mail form - 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas06/attach/faxform/doc

If you choose to complete your proposal electronically and submit it via email, I suggest you save the file, open it in Word, save your changes, then send it as an email attachment. Proposals are requested by December 8.

Bill is welcoming presentations in a broad range of content areas including innovative camp programming; camping research and evaluation; day camping; reaching and serving special audiences; emerging issues; focusing on positive youth development; and the business of camp: human resources, operations and staff training. The target audience includes camping professionals, staff and volunteers outside of the realm of Extension and 4-H, so presentations should be designed to appeal to a broad camping audience.

4-H AFTERSCHOOL SURVEY DEADLINE EXTENDED

Thank you to all who have entered their data into the 4-H Afterschool survey. Those conducting the survey feel there are still some who have not had a chance to enter their data. Therefore, they are EXTENDING the deadline to December 15. If you are responsible for youth development programming in the after-school hours, please complete the 4-H afterschool survey at http://ext.msstate.edu/survey/afterschool/. Data make the most important and greatest impact on our potential donors and helps to keep program support in place.

4-H GIS/GPS GRANTS AVAILABLE

An opportunity to receive support for your county 4-H GIS/GPS programs is available. 4-H GIS/GPS is a technology-based 4-H program that is becoming more and more popular throughout the nation. GIS stands for Geographic Information System and GPS stands for Global Positioning System. This technology is being used by 4-H members to learn about geography, history, geology, soil science and many other areas. 4-H members are mapping their communities, locating historic artifacts, geocaching and teaching others about this important cutting-edge technology.

ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.) is the company that is directing the 2007 ESRI GIS for 4-H Grant. Below is information from ESRI:

The 2007 ESRI GIS for 4-H (U.S.) Grant guidelines will be available mid December 2006. To receive an email notification when the 2007 4-H GIS for 4-H Grant information has been posted in mid December, please sign up for email notification by going to www.esri.com/grants and completing the grant notification registration form at the bottom of the page. Please indicate you would like to receive “education” or “youth club” grant notifications.

The application questions, guidelines and completion requirements will be very similar to the 2006 4-H grants with the exception we hope to roll out our online grant application for the 2007 4-H Grants application process. The application period will be January 1, 2007 through February 28, 2007. The 4-H GIS GPS leadership team will be reviewing the submitted applications beginning March 2nd with final notification of awards by April 30, 2007.

If you would like to get a head start on putting your grant application together, you may begin by looking at the 2006 grant guidelines found in the "Past Grants" section of the ESRI educational grants link at www.esri.com/grants.

Please use your exploring and investigative mind to determine the appropriate software and grant level for your community. You’ll find the hardware requirements for ESRI software on the ESRI Web page at www.esri.com, look under the Products tab. The examples of past 4-H projects are at www.esri.com/4-H and the 4-H Community Atlas projects may be found at www.esri.com/communityatlas by selecting youth club. The 2007 ESRI GIS for 4-H Grant program will offer two levels of grants.

1. The introductory grant for clubs new to GIS. This grant will provide basic ArcView software, a few extensions, virtual campus courses and curriculum.
2. Intermediate grant for clubs who have successfully completed previous grant requirements. This grant will provide software upgrades to current technology versions, an option for advanced functionality extensions and CityGreen software (www.americanforests.org), along with virtual campus classes and curriculum. The CityGreen software is a new addition to the intermediate grant and is a wonderful aid in park and forest inventories and planning. It is available only for the intermediate grants.

Brief timeline for 2007 ESRI GIS for 4-H Grant application:
December 15, 2006: Grant information will be available on the ESRI Grants Web site.
January 1, 2007 - February 28, 2007: Grant applications may be submitted through the on-line application process.
March 2 - April 29, 2007: 4-H GIS/GPS leadership team will review grants and submit approved grants for award.
April 30, 2007: All 4-H clubs receiving a 2007 GIS for 4-H Grant will be notified.

HONOR CLUB/CONTINUING SERVICE END-OF-YEAR DEADLINE

Many counties initiate their new Honor Club members or recognize their Junior High Continuing Service Award recipients at the beginning of the year. Anne-Marie Scoble, our student assistant working with Honor Club applications and Junior High Continuing Service will be leaving on December 5 and will not return until January 11. I will be out of the office the first week of December. Please keep this in mind if you have Honor Club applications that need to be approved or 4-H’ers to recommend for Junior High Continuing Service. It would be helpful if we receive any requests for the first two weeks of January before December 15.

WEB SITE OFFERS RESOURCES FOR TEACHING TENNESSEE HISTORY

There is a great Web site for teaching history to youth. TN History for Kids can be found at www.tnhistoryforkids.org/.
