AMERICAN POLYPAY SHEEP ASSOCIATION STARTER FLOCK

The American Polypay Sheep Association Starter Flock is in the fourth year of this popular program. Due to the high recognition and increased demand for this starter flock, our association will give away two starter flocks this year. The winners will receive the animals during the National Polypay Show and Sale in Springfield, Illinois, on June 21-23, 2007.

The winner will receive three registered Polypay ewes, and a runner up will receive two registered Polypay ewes. Both recipients will receive $100 buying credit to use at the 2007 National Polypay Sale. The buying credit is a donation in loving memory of J Charles Ripley. Chuck passed away unexpectedly September 5, 2005. He was an ag teacher and a well respected shepherd of Polypay sheep in Minnesota. Chuck helped plan this starter flock during its formation. He promoted the program as a Director on the American Polypay Sheep Association Board.

In each of the two starter flocks, one ewe will be futurity nominated by the association. This futurity ewe can be brought back and shown as a futurity yearling ewe in the 2008 National Junior Show. This futurity class is a popular class in the Polypay Junior Show.

This is how the starter flock process works. Any youth in the United States is eligible to apply for this starter flock as long as they meet the following requirements:

1. Be involved in 4-H or FFA.
2. Between the ages of 8-19(as of March 1, 2007).
3. Attend the 2007 National Polypay Show and Sale weekend if chosen as
    winner.
4. Use a registered Polypay ram for the first breeding.
5. Write a one page essay (questions on application).
6. Submit a letter of recommendation with application.
7. Encouraged to attend the 2008 National Show and Sale.

Interest in Polypay sheep on the farm and at sales is continuing to rise. The 2006 National Sale recorded the highest average in over a decade. The Center of the Nation Sale, featuring Polypay sheep with EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences ) was also a big success. Many sheep producers, breeders, and youth are noticing that these sheep work. Polypay sheep are very manageable for youth with their medium frame size, docile temperament and easy fitting requirements. The biggest advantage for youth is the productivity of Polypay sheep in the barn after being exhibited at shows throughout the summer.

Polypay sheep are production oriented animals that are also well received by judges and buyers in shows and sales around the country. The Polypay breed is well known as one of the premier production sheep breeds in the world. Multiple births and the ability to breed out of season make this breed a profitable choice. To demonstrate their productivity, any yearling ewe shown in the country must have lambed prior to showing. All animals shown and sold at Nationals must be from a multiple birth. The Polypay breed can be enrolled in NSIP (National Sheep Improvement Program). This program uses EPD’s to measure the production of sheep. One donated ewe Iamb in each starter flock will come with NSIP records, including EPD’s for all production traits.

The Polypay National Show and Sale is held in Springfield, Illinois every June. A large part of our National event is our Junior show. This show has seen tremendous growth in the last few years in Junior attendance and sheep exhibited. There are many classes for the youth to display their animals, and the show is a fun and popular start to our National event Along with the Junior Show and National Show and Sale, a pizza party and banquet are other events that occur that weekend.

If you are interested in applying, we encourage you to research our breed. Start with our website at polypay.org, contact the association, a breeder, or a professional in your area for more information. If you fit the requirements mentioned above, we encourage your response. Whether you own a flock, or are just wishing to start one, this starter flock is an excellent opportunity.

CHARLOTTE’S WEB THEATER QUESTIONS

There have been a number of questions concerning theater participation with Hollywood Movie Money (HMM), the company that oversees online ticket sales for this promotion. There is a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) link on National 4-H Council’s Web site (www.fourhcouncil.edu) that addresses these questions and many others, but I wanted to provide you directly with answers so that you are able to respond to any questions you may receive on the matter. Please see below.

Q. How do I know if my local theater is participating? Currently, when I type in my zip code it doesn’t show theaters near me.
A: Log onto www.hollywoodmoviemoney.com and enter a zip code. ALL accepting theaters partnered with HMM show up in this database and are not restricted by the Charlotte’s Web effort. If the theater shows up in this database, it will eventually show up (by Friday, December 15) in the 4-H/Charlotte’s Web ticket purchase program on HMM.

At this time, all of the theaters partnered with HMM and showing Charlotte’s Web have not uploaded their theater information to HMM. Theaters will be added to the site daily as we move closer to the movie’s opening day (Friday, December 15). If you do not see your local theater currently listed and yet it is listed on the general HMM Web site database as stated above, check back closer to the movie opening date to see if it has been added yet. The full compliment of theaters showing Charlotte’s Web who are partnered with Hollywood Movie Money (HMM) will appear in the HMM/4-H/Charlotte’s Web zip code system by the movie’s opening day, Friday, December 15.

Q: There is a theater close to me, but it is not listed on the ticketing Web site database. What do I do?
A: There are a few theaters that do not participate in HMM’s movie tickets sales process. Occasionally, HMM does not know the theater exists. Visit www.hollywoodmoviemoney.com/contact to give HMM the name and location of the theater. If possible, they will contact the theater and attempt to negotiate a partnership that will add them to the program. At the least, they will be able to give you the location of an alternative theater.
