“MAKE A STATEMENT …” AT TAE4-HW ANNUAL CONFERENCE!
Please don't forget to mark your 2007 calendar for the Annual TAE4-HW Conference. “Make a Statement” is the theme for this year’s conference. The event will be held May 2-4, 2007 at the Music Road Hotel in Pigeon Forge. The 30th anniversary of this statewide event will be hosted by the TAE4-HW Specialist Region.
In place of the traditional program updates and technical skills development, this year’s conference will focus more on helping you to “make a statement” in the areas of personal and professional improvement. More details regarding the schedule of events, directions as well as information regarding registration fees and deadlines are forthcoming. We hope that you will mark your calendars and make plans to attend!

SMITH COUNTY LIVESTOCK TEAMS PARTICIPATE IN PHOENIX EVENT
Two Smith County 4-H livestock judging teams participated in the youth livestock judging contest at the 59th Annual Arizona National Livestock Show held December 31 in Phoenix. Amber Allen, Holly Dickens, Robert Halfacre, Sarah McDonald, David Scudder Tyler Tisdale and Monica Wilmore competed in the event as a result of placing among the top five teams at State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest held in Murfreesboro last June.
Forty teams and 139 individuals competed in this prestigious Arizona National Livestock Judging Classic with pre-contest workout sessions held on Saturday and then the contest on Sunday. Even though all seven Smith County 4-H’ers stated this was the hardest contest they had ever participated in, both teams placed in the top 10 in the contest.
The Smith County A team consisting of Amber Allen, Holly Dickens, Sarah McDonald and Monica Wilmore placed 3rd high overall. This team was 3rd high in total beef scores, 2nd high in total swine scores and 2nd high in team reasons scores. Holly Dickens placed 5th high overall and 5th in individual swine scores. Monica Wilmore was awarded 10th high overall and 4th in individual reasons scores. Sarah McDonald placed 11th high overall.
The Smith County B team consisting of Robert Halfacre, David Scudder and Tyler Tisdale received 9th overall. The B team placed 2nd in team sheep scores.
The Arizona National Livestock Show was certainly an exciting event that included shows and activities aimed at supporting youth and promoting education of livestock and agriculture. The group really had a great time and enjoyed Arizona’s warm hospitality and unique culture. These two teams were coached by volunteer leaders Bill Kuecker, Connie Kuecker and David Carr. The teams were accompanied to Phoenix by coach David Carr, Extension agent Carol McDonald and four parents.

Here is a great way to participate in the upcoming Tennessee Saves Week, February 26-March 2.
This year’s event will host a Piggy Bank Pageant on Legislative Day (Wednesday, February 28) in Nashville at Legislative Plaza. The pageant will be open to all 4-H club members. Any county wishing to participate should hold a county pageant to determine their winning entries for the state pageant.
Each county may enter up to three contestants per grade per county in the state pageant (for example: 3 entries for 4th grade, 3 entries for 5th grade, etc.). County-winning piggy banks may be brought/sent to the Wilson County Extension office at the address listed below.
