4-H ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS PLANNING TOOL LAUNCHED
Want to know how to intentionally implement a youth development approach and better meet the needs of young people in a positive way?
The 4-H Essential Elements Program Planning Tool will help you discover how your 4-H programs measure up next to the essential elements. By taking the 4-H Essential Element survey, you will verify the strong points and identify areas where you can increase your emphasis for each of the essential elements of belonging, mastery, independence and generosity.
Need resources that will help your 4-H partners understand and apply the 4-H essential elements? The 4-H Essential Element Program Planning Tool offers some of the best resources from current youth development research and CYFERnet that relate to the
4-H Essential Elements. These can be used for staff support, volunteer training, new staff orientation and mentoring boards and committees. Volunteers will find the 4-H Essential Element Program Planning Tool easy to use and full of good ideas to make them more effective as leaders.
The 4-H Essential Elements Program Assessment Tool is a project of the John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona and National 4-H Headquarters. Funding for this project was provided by National 4-H Council.

CYFERnet’s DIGITAL MEDIA SHOW-AND-TELL CONTEST
From 4-H clubs to summer camps to athletic teams, every youth program has something that makes it special. While one group is painting a mural or designing a fair exhibit, another group is planting trees or building a Web site. Some youth keep returning to their program to see their friends, to learn new skills, to explore nature or all of the above. What about YOU?
During CYFERnet's Digital Media Show-and-Tell contest, you can let the world know what makes your CYFAR and 4-H program special. Your mission is to use digital photography, audio, video or a mix of digital media to answer the question, "Why am I here?" In other words, what do you enjoy most about your program and what benefits keep you coming back for more?
Work independently or as a team to show off your art, communication and technology skills while telling your story. CYFERnet will post submissions online for the public to enjoy. Our panel of judges will announce and recognize the winners at the May 2007 CYFAR conference.
For complete details, go to www.cyfernet.org/4htech/missions.html.

GREAT WEB SITE FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING RESOURCES
The FREE Web site has been redesigned! White the design is new, the goal of FREE remains the same... to make it easier for you to find more than 1,500 teaching and learning resources available from the federal government.
The new design, launched last month, has improved navigation and images throughout the site. A new “Subject Map” shows more than 100 topics and the number of resources for each.
Stop by and take a look at http://free.ed.gov.
Make sure you check out the “Health and Physical Education” and “Sciences” sections. They have really good resources. Also, there is a section on “Financial Literacy” under the “Special Collections” heading that has some great links.

NEW 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ICON
Most of you are aware of the marketing effort with the UT brand icon. I am sure those of you who work in the 4-H Youth Development field noticed right away that UT is in the word “youth.” Martin Koon, Extension area specialist in the Central Region, has worked with someone in Creative Services at UT to develop a 4-H Youth Development icon. I have received permission to use the icon. Hopefully, it will be useful to you. The name recognition and connection to UT should assist in marketing. You can download the icon from 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas07/images/4hyouthicon.jpg.

UT BLOCK AND BRIDLE ROUNDUP
The UTK Block and Bridle Club is currently making plans for our 68th annual Roundup, to be held on March 3, 2007, on the University of Tennessee agricultural campus in Knoxville. The livestock and meat judging clinics will be separate again this year.
In the livestock, dairy and meats judging contests, three contestants constitute a team. Teams of four may be entered, and in this case, the lowest score will be dropped. In addition, individuals may be entered. All contestants registered in the judging contests will compete for individual awards. Students may enter only one judging event, livestock, dairy or meats, as they will be held simultaneously.
A quiz bowl team is made up of 2-4 students. The questions are presented in a “Jeopardy” format and will test students’ knowledge of livestock production, judging, products, and other areas of the livestock industry. Due to time restraints, senior contestants in either the livestock judging contest or the dairy judging contest will not be able to participate in the quiz bowl.
An entry fee of $10.00 will be charged for each contestant. This registration fee is necessary to cover the expenses of lunch, the clinics and contests, the quiz bowl and the awards. Additional lunch tickets may be purchased for $5.00 for coaches, advisors, agents and guests. This amount may be sent in with your registration materials or paid on the day of Roundup.
All participants, coaches, advisors, agents and guests are invited to stay for the opening ceremony and the awards ceremony, and we strongly encourage you to do so! We know that it is a long day and everyone is in a hurry to get home, but we are honored to have the opportunity to recognize and congratulate all of our participants. The high individual in each the dairy, livestock and meats judging contest will receive a belt buckle and plaques will be awarded to other high scoring teams and individuals. Pictures will be taken of all winners and put on our Web site. Also, everyone is invited to stay for our collegiate showmanship contest following the awards ceremony.
For additional information and to register, visit the Animal Science Web site at http://animalscience.ag.utk.edu/. Click on the 2007 Roundup link under “News and Events” or the direct URL below.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email either of the Roundup co-chairps, Andy Magee and Erin Bartley, using the contact information provided below. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, March 3!
