4-H GIS GRANT DEADLINE EXTENDED

We have just been notified by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) that they are extending the application deadline date for the "ESRI GIS Grant Program for U.S. 4-H" until Thursday, March 15 (originally February 28). Please advise any 4-H volunteers or clubs that you may know who are working on GIS proposals for 2007.

As a reminder, ESRI, in cooperation with National 4-H Headquarters and Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES)/U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and American Forests announced two ESRI GIS grants for U.S. 4-H to support its geospatial outreach, education and community involvement efforts. The goal of this program is to foster and support the integration of geographic information system (GIS) software in U.S. 4-H clubs.

Grant categories include an introductory grant for 4-H clubs new to GIS and an intermediate grant for those 4-H clubs that received previous ESRI 4-H grants and completed the grant requirements.

Eligible Applicants: A U.S. 4-H community or in-school club, 4-H after-school program, 4-H special interest group, 4-H school enrichment group, 4-H camp or similar 4-H unit that meets regularly and is recognized as an authorized 4-H group within its state's 4-H program.

Go to www.esri.com/grants/esri/2007_4h.html to access the application guidelines for this grant. For additional information, please contact Esther Worker at eworker@esri.com.

UTK BLOCK AND BRIDLE ROUNDUP REMINDER

Block and Bridle Roundup is March 3, 2007. This year, online preregistration will be required and is due by Friday, February 23. The three contests are separated, thus you will have to enter different teams separately. For junior and junior high teams that want to compete in the Quiz Bowl, you will have to enter them separately as well. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the confusion of recent years.

Registration may be completed at the animalscience.ag.utk.edu/Block&BridleClub/RoundUp.htm. To register, simply click on the “Online Entry System” tab and follow the instructions for registering. If you encounter any problems, please let me know. This is very similar to the online entry system for beef and sheep expos so most of you should be familiar with the format.

Another change this year will be the livestock judging clinic, as it will function much like the actual contest. This year teams will remain in the stands with their coach/advisor. A class of market steers will be led in the arena, and students will have already been provided with the evaluation sheets that are filled out and calculations shown. The same will be done for a class of market hogs. Then a class of cattle, sheep and hogs will follow, and students will be able to judge these practice classes.

Following each class, the official placings, cuts and reasons will be provided by a member of the current UT livestock judging team. Students will be given 15-20 minutes per class. Lunch will follow the clinic and then the contest, quiz bowl and reasons will follow as in the past.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. I look forward to seeing you and your team on March 3. Remember: Online entries are due by Friday, February 23, 2007.
