2007 4-H COMMUNITY ATV SAFETY GRANT

The 2007 4-H Community ATV Safety Grant offers grants up to $7,500 for new applicants and up to $2,000 for the 2005 and 2006 grant recipients for continuation grants (2005 and 2006 grant recipients may apply for a new grant if their focus is new and has a broader reach). New opportunities include a four-day ASI instructor training and ASI ATV RiderCourse funding. This grant is open to 4-H/Extension groups in local communities, in counties and at the state level. This grant provides opportunities for young people and adults to address critical ATV safety issues. Youth are empowered to lead the planning, implementation and evaluation process with mentorship from adults. Youth will learn how their leadership can result in community collaborations that amplify the impact of their project.

Grants are offered only to 4-H/Extension programs in the United States and its territories. If you are not a part of 4-H, we encourage you to contact your local Extension 4-H office and become a project collaborator! Information and the grant application can be found at www.atv-youth.org/about.aspx.

Completed applications should be emailed as an attachment to Alice Ann Moore at the Tennessee 4-H Youth Development department for review before the national deadline. Applications will then be forwarded as an email attachment to 2007atvsafety@fourhcouncil.edu.  Applications must be received via email as an attachment and are due to National 4-H Council no later than Monday, April 9, 2007, 5:00 p.m. EDT.

If you have any questions, email schaconas@fourhcouncil.edu or call 301-961-2858. Funding for the grant is provided by Specialty Vehicle Institute of America/ATV Safety Institute.

The inservice event will be held April 24-26 at the Doubletree Hotel in Murfreesboro. The theme for this year’s inservice is “Tennessee 4-H: A Timeless Tradition Transformed by New Ideas.”

Hotel lodging will be available through the Murfreesboro Doubletree Hotel or the Hampton Inn. It is each participant’s responsibility to make their reservations. The phone number for the Murfreesboro Doubletree Hotel is 615-895-5555. The phone number for the Hampton Inn is 615-896-1172. Please be sure to register under 4-H's blocked rooms. Select the region you represent by using the scroll bar. Scroll to the bottom of the page and check “Statewide 4-H Training” under the “4-H Trainings” header. Finally, click “submit form” to complete the registration. The deadline for inservice registration is March 21.

The 2007 4-H inservice will focus on S.E.T. (Science, Engineering and Technology) programming, teen programming and 4-H project curriculum. Specific topics will include such areas as bullying, crisis management, liability issues, communications, marketing, graphic design, environmental education, professional development and more.

We look forward to seeing you on April 24, 2007, in Murfreesboro. If you have any questions regarding the 2007 4-H inservice “Tennessee 4-H: A Timeless Tradition Transformed by New Ideas,” please contact Alice Ann Moore at the state 4-H youth development department at 865-974-2128.

MAKE IT AN HONOR TO BE IN HONOR CLUB

Honor Club is the first step in Tennessee’s three-level recognition program... Honor Club, All Stars and Vol State. Honor Club recognizes members for participation. Membership does not involve being the winner in any kind of competition. Members receive points just for participating. Any 4-H’er qualifying with the minimum number of points on the application can achieve Honor Club recognition.

How can you make it an honor to be in your county Honor Club? One way to make Honor Club special is to stage an impressive induction ceremony for all your new initiates. Recognize your initiates at an appropriate time in front of their parents, peers, county officials or others they view as important to them.

The Tennessee 4-H Honor Club Recognition Ceremony (EC750) is a step-by-step guide to staging a candlelight Honor Club initiation ceremony. The publication comes complete with a script, list of materials needed and staging diagram. If you do not have a copy in your office, it is available online from the “Forms & Materials” page on the Tennessee 4-H Web site at 4htennessee.edu/forms&materials/. The direct link is 4h.tennessee.edu/forms/acrobat/ec750.pdf.

Honor Club recognizes members for meeting a standard of excellence and recognition is a strategy for helping young people become more capable and confident. Through the acknowledgment, affirmation, and positive reinforcement of members’ efforts, feeling of competence and capability increase and participation continues. An impressive initiation ceremony can be the first step in building that competence and capability in your Honor Club members.
