4-H INSERVICE REGISTRATION AND HOTEL RESERVATION DEADLINE IS MARCH 21

As a reminder, if you have not registered or made hotel reservations for the 2007 4-H inservice, you have until March 21. The inservice event will be held April 24-26 at the Doubletree Hotel in Murfreesboro. You may begin picking up your program packet at noon on April 24. The program begins at 1:00 p.m. CDT. The theme for this year's inservice is "Tennessee 4-H: A Timeless Tradition Transformed by New Ideas."

Hotel lodging will be available through the Murfreesboro Doubletree Hotel or the Hampton Inn. It is each participant's responsibility to make their reservations. The phone number for the Murfreesboro Doubletree Hotel is 615-895-5555. The phone number for the Hampton Inn is 615-896-1172. Please be sure to register under 4-H's blocked rooms. The rooms are reserved at the state rate, but each employee is responsible for his or her own charges. Hotel reservations must be made by Wednesday, March 21.

In order to confirm we have enough blocked rooms, please send correspondence that you will be using the rooms and your roommate(s) names to your regional program leader when you make your hotel reservation. If you are not staying in either of the hotels but attending the event, please make sure that you contact your regional program leader and let them know that you will be attending.

Event registration is separate from hotel reservations. It is important that you do both. To register for the inservice event, you must access the inservice database at www.utextension.utk.edu/central/training/4h-training.htm. Once you have accessed the database, you will need to register online. To register, online, click "on line registration." Then type in your first name, your last name and your county. Select the region you represent by using the scroll bar. Scroll to the bottom of the page and check "Statewide 4-H Training" under the "4-H Trainings" header. Finally, click "submit form" to complete the registration. The deadline for inservice registration is March 21.

The 2007 4-H inservice will focus on S.E.T. (Science, Engineering and Technology) programming, teen programming and 4-H project curriculum. Specific topics will include such areas as bullying, crisis management, liability issues, communications, marketing, graphic design, environmental education, professional development and more.

We look forward to seeing you on April 24, 2007, in Murfreesboro. If you have any questions regarding the 2007 4-H inservice "Tennessee 4-H: A Timeless Tradition Transformed by New Ideas," please contact Alice Ann Moore at the state 4-H youth development department at 865-974-2128.

SUPER AND 4-H ENROLLMENT PLANS AND PROGRESS TO DATE

Did you rollover Blue Ribbon to 2007?
Counties should have completed the Blue Ribbon rollover to 2007. Member information should be updated for the current year making sure the data is correct for all active members (name, address, grade, club, project, etc.)

After SUPER Enrollment is deployed, what about our data in Blue Ribbon?
We will have a one-time upload available from Blue Ribbon to SUPER. The following data elements are being considered for the one time upload from Blue Ribbon to SUPER: first name, middle initial, last name, address, city, state, zip, race/ethnicity, gender, phone, date of birth, club name, residence, grade, parent name and project. Activities and awards should be entered directly in SUPER .

When will SUPER Enrollment be deployed?
It is impossible to provide a deployment date. Regional IT personnel and Regional program leaders have looked at the module in development on February 23. Approximately 50 percent of the module was complete. Regional IT personnel and regional program leaders have been preparing for testing the module in March. The deployment date depends on how well the module performs under testing.

What is SUPER Enrollment Module going to do?
* Register clients for county, multi-county, regional and state courses/events.
* Capture enrollment information: grade, race/ethnicity, projects, clubs, etc.
* Export enrollment data for multiple uses, such as creating mailing labels.
* Capture member participation: activities, interest, awards and courses/events.
* Complete Annual 4-H Enrollment Report (ES-237)
* Capture adult volunteers (replaces Lotus Notes database).

TEENS FROM COFFEE COUNTY TAKE TENNESSEE STATE LIFESMARTS TITLE

The Coffee County Green LifeSmarts team beat out seven teams and captured the Tennessee State LifeSmarts Championship by successfully fielding questions about real-life marketplace issues at the Wilson County Fairgrounds in Lebanon on March 10. Team members are Daniel Sherrouse, Jordan Kelly, Nick Calderwood, Ashlee Duncan and Sarah Russell. Their coach is Michelle Matthews, 4-H Extension agent. Coffee County White LifeSmarts team captured second place with team members Tiffany LaLonde, Daniel Anderson, Deborah Anderson, Andy Brown and Nathan Stone with Michelle Matthews also serving as their coach.

Teens from across the state first competed online for a chance to go to the in-person state finals held March 10, 2007 in Lebanon. As result of being named state champion, the Coffee County Green team has qualified for the national LifeSmarts competition to be held April 21-25 in Orlando, Florida. Other participating in the state finals included teams from the following Tennessee Counties: Bedford, Madison, Marion (2 teams), Sumner and Tipton.

LifeSmarts, a consumer education competition that challenges teens in grades 9-12 about personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer right and responsibilities, is a program of the national Consumer League. LifeSmarts participants win by learning to avoid common pitfalls, navigate the government and understand credit card jargon before they have to sign on the dotted line. LifeSmarts participants in Tennessee have gained many of the consumer “smarts” they will need to make it in the real world. We are proud to have Coffee County represent us at nationals.

USING THE 4-H NAME AND EMBLEM

The 4-H Name and Emblem is a highly valued mark within our country's history. It has a very unique and special status. It is in a category similar to the Presidential Seal and the Olympic Emblem. The federal protection makes it a mark into and of itself with protection that supersedes the limited authorities of both a trademark and a copyright. As a result, responsibility and stewardship for the 4-H Name and Emblem were not given to the U.S. Patent office but to the a member of the Cabinet, the Secretary of Agriculture.

The official 4-H Emblem is a clover with four leaves and an "H" on each leaf. The clover's stem must point to the right as you look at the image. The 4-H emblem is not a plain four-leaf clover. The 4-H Emblem should appear in specific colors and in its entirety. The 4-H Name and Emblem belongs to the 4-H Youth Development Program, under the authority of USDA.

If you are a 4-H member or volunteer, you are permitted to use the 4-H Name and Emblem once the program is chartered with the 4-H charter. Each county 4-H program in Tennessee is chartered. New charters were issued last year in Tennessee.

If you are a commercial vendor, private organization or any other entity, the local Extension office or state 4-H office may be contacted to determine what steps need to be taken for use of the Name and Emblem. The State 4-H program leader/director has the authority to issue consent for use of the Name and Emblem in their respective state.

In all private and commercial use of the 4-H Emblem, the statement "18USC707" must legibly appear either to the right of the base of the stem or below the lower right leaf of the clover. For use internally within the Extension System (all 4-H Youth Development programs and clubs duly given authorization to use the 4-H Name & Emblem) use of the statement is at the discretion of the State 4-H program leader/director.

If you need more information or have questions, you should contact Alice Ann Moore, Director, Tennessee 4-H Youth Development.
