CLEARINGHOUSE OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES IN TENNESSEE

I recently became aware of an opportunity to share our environmental education programs from counties, regions, 4-H Centers and the state with Tennessee Department of Education. Please read carefully the information below I received from Tami Coleman with project CENTS. If you have a program, please complete the simple process to register your program on the Web site. The Department of Education is a willing partner in this endeavor.

Some of you who were involved in the EE Summit at MTSU last year have already heard about the Web site we are building to enable Tennessee teachers, parents and students to access information about statewide environmental education opportunities. If you were not able to be with us, and this is all new to you, visit www.eeintennessee.org to see what we have. This Web site is cosponsored by the Tennessee Environmental Education Association (TEEA) and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) as part of a Southeastern EE Capacity Building Grant from EPA.

The first step in offering this clearinghouse of information is to input the information from all of the environmental education providers. This is where you fit in now. Please take time in the next few days to go online and register your organization. Our goal is to have complete information about all environmental education providers in Tennessee. This Web site will be formally “launched” to the public during Environmental Education Week, April 16-22, 2007.

We recommend you use a Word document we have development to organize your thoughts, as well as check spelling and grammar prior to completing the form online. You can access the EE Organization Profile Template at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas07/attach/profiletemplate.doc. Then you may cut and paste into the appropriate sections online. Even if you don't think you have time to get all of your information in, please go ahead and get the basics on the site. It is easier than you may think! And, it is easy to go back later and add or update things anytime the need arises.

The first person to create a profile for your EE organization will become the administrator for the organization's profile. That person can then add additional individuals who can help add profile details, make edits, submit events, etc. Each person who will input information should have their own account with their own username and password.

All information will come to the EEinTennessee.org site administrator to be reviewed before it becomes 'live.'

Instructions:
Go to http://www.EEinTennessee.org. At the top of that page, click on "My Account." Then, follow the prompts to create a new account.

After that, you are ready to add your organization. You may get there more than one way. One way is to click on "organizations" at the top, then choose "add a new organization" from the pull down menu. This is where you answer a few basic questions, and then you will see the same questions included in the EE Organization Profile Template.

Not all fields are required. You may add one or two photographs if you like by using the “upload images” feature. Or, email photos to me at Tamara.Coleman@state.tn.us, and I will do it for you.

Next, you may want to add some events to the calendar. On the top navigation bar, click on "Events," then choose "Add a new event." Follow the prompts from there.

Do not hesitate to call or email me directly if you have any questions. My contact information is below.

CYFERnet MISSION OF THE MONTH: SEASONS AND LIGHT

This month, CYFERnet continues the "It's a Mystery" exploration and looks at light pollution with the "GLOBE at Night" project.

It's a Mystery: Now through May, we invite you to explore the mysteries of time, light and season. If you haven't done so already, register online for the official Mystery competition, which involves locating 10 global "mystery sites" based on the time the sun rises and sets. Or, try CYFERnet's "Time Enough" activity, a look at the sunrise, sunset and daylight times in your community.

GLOBE at Night: This national science project looks at how the brightness of outdoor lights affects the brightness of the stars. Each March, people across the country stand in their backyards to collect data on the brightness of stars and light pollution. Once the data is combined, we can see differences across the country and from year to year. The 2007 GLOBE at Night project runs March 8-21.

Visit http://cyfernet.org for complete details.
