JUNIOR MARKET GOAT FIELD DAY HELD IN BEDFORD COUNTY
2007 Junior Market Goat Field Day was held on April 28, 2007, at the Bedford County Ag Center. Over 80 4-H members, parents and leaders attended this activity.
Attendees had a chance to learn about the goat industry during the Goat Bowl and selecting project animals through a goat judging contest. They also learned the proper method to show goats and how to grill goat meat (chevon).
While these were important things, the hit of the day was the Goat Olympics. 4-H members had a chance to go through an obstacle course while leading their goat. Most made several trips through the course before lunch. Another Junior Market Field Day is already in the plans for next year.

TENNESSEANS TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL 4-H CURRICULUM SUMMIT
Kathy Finley, Extension agent in Robertson County, and Steve Sutton, Extension specialist in the 4-H Youth Development department, have been selected to represent the Southern Region at the National 4-H Curriculum Summit. The Summit will be held at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland, June 12-14, 2007.
Amy Gallimore, Extension Specialist, Tennessee 4-H Youth Development, will also be serving as a session committee chair during the summit. Amy will be presenting an overview of one of the issues (quality review, delivery methods and training), introducing panelists with relevant expertise and introducing the questions participants will address.
Each region was invited to nominate 25 representatives to participate in this hands-on meeting. Attendees will come from a range of individuals who work with 4-H curricula, including youth, volunteers, county faculty, state specialists, state program leaders, on-campus faculty with Extension appointments and other stakeholders.
The National 4-H Curriculum Summit is an exciting opportunity for to explore:
| * |
the goals and appropriate standards for 4-H materials and relevant agreements and practices to support them; |
| * |
the future curriculum priority-setting process; |
| * |
methods for ensuring quality and innovation; and |
| * |
professional development to strengthen our system capacity for quality curriculum development. |
The goal of this national meeting is to provide momentum for 4-H faculty and staff to foster improvements as we transition our national curriculum processes. These improvements include:
| * |
materials to attract and retain a population of youth more reflective of the diversity of our society; |
| * |
exploration of delivery methods and curricular strategies for the development of subject area competencies; and |
| * |
the incorporation of effective youth development models and principles to assist youth in the application of knowledge and the development of skills and knowledge important to succeed. |
Kathy and Steve have a strong background in curriculum development, and Amy is a talented facilitator. I know Tennessee and the Southern Region will be well represented.
