APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR YOUTH GARDEN GRANTS
The National Gardening Association and Home Depot have announced the 25th annual Youth Garden Grant Program. Over the last twenty-five years, NGA's Youth Garden Grants program has helped more than 1.3 million youngsters reap rewards and vital life lessons from working in gardens and habitats. Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational groups throughout the United States are eligible to apply.
Applicants must plan to garden in 2008 with at least fifteen children between the ages of three and 18 years. Previous Youth Garden Grant winners who wish to reapply must wait one year and have significantly expanded their garden programs.
Applicants should demonstrate a child-centered plan that emphasizes children/youth learning and working in an outdoor garden. Areas considered for support include educational, environmental, or social programming; leadership; community support; sustainability; innovation, and need. Each winning program will receive educational materials.
Grant applications are available from www.kidsgardening.com/grants.asp. The application deadline is November 1, 2007.

JUNIOR 4-H CAMP CURRICULUM UPDATE
The music section of the junior 4-H camp curriculum, "One Big World," has been updated. Please go to the Resources for Agents link under the 4-H Centers and Camping Web site to download the updated music section under the "One Big World" heading.
As a reminder, "One Big World" is this year's theme for junior 4-H camp. The title of the curriculum symbolizes the emphasis on humanity's existence within the context of "environmental awareness." By being stewards of nature, campers are actually being stewards of humanity. Activities which promote environmental awareness, conservation and scientific understanding will encourage campers to live on this "one big world" together and become responsible citizens.
Have a great 4-H camping season!

LIVESTOCK SKILLATHON RECOGNITION PROGRAM ENHANCED
Tennessee 4-H livestock skillathon educational program is going to the next level. Approval has been granted for Tennessee to send a team of beef, sheep and swine project members to compete in the National 4-H Livestock Skillathon Contest hosted by the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. Even though a couple Tennessee 4-H livestock teams and one skillathon team have participated in the national skillathon contest, Tennessee has not been an annual participant in the event. Participation in the national contest would serve as a goal and reward to youth and extension educators that have excelled in the Tennessee skillathon educational programs. Participation in the national contest will provide another educational experience for Tennessee youth. The national contest offers several new experiences to Tennessee youth. There are cooperative learning experiences through "team" stations in addition to the "individual" stations.
Team selection would be part of the recognition program for the state 4-H livestock events. The Tennessee national 4-H skillathon team will consist of six individuals. First and second place individuals from the 11-12th grade division of the skillathons at the Tennessee Junior Livestock Beef and Sheep events and the Tennessee 4-H Market Hog Show would qualify for the state team. In the situation that an individual would qualify via two state events or an individual declines to participate, the skillathon coordinator and team coach would make the selection(s) to fill the team. All six individuals will prepare and travel to Louisville for the national contest, but the team coach will select the four individuals to compete on contest day.
The team will be coached by an Extension agent that has an outstanding county program in livestock education. Team coach for 2007 is Larry Darnell (Williamson County). He will be assisted by Amy Williams (Loudon County) the 2008 team coach. Selection as team coach for the Tennessee 4-H skillathon team should be considered an honor, much like an outstanding 4-H agent selected to attend National 4-H Congress.
The first team is being funded through the Tennessee 4-H Foundation, but we are looking for donors that can sustain the program in future years. If you know someone that might have an interest, please contact either Mark Gateley or me.

SOUTHERN REGION VOLUNTEER FORUM REGISTRATION INFORMATION
The Southern Region Volunteer Forum is an excellent place to share and learn about 4-H programs implemented throughout the southern states. Volunteers from 13 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands participate and bring a wealth of experience, information, materials and fun!
The registration packet is posted on the Tennessee 4-H Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/. Look in the What’s Happening box for the link.
Participation in the forum is a unique experience for volunteers and agent. It is a great place to network with other states and to expand creative ideas! Not only is it educational... it is also a cultural experience.
Kentucky will be the host state and the staff from Louisiana is responsible for workshops and funshops. As soon as a final list of classes is available, it will be posted on our Web site and in our 4-H Ideas newsletter. Please share this information with your volunteers.
There is one major change this year regarding registration. The late fee is $50.00. The planning committee requested this to allow the hosting state proper time to place orders for printing programs and bags. Those of you attending last year may remember that we almost did not have enough of these materials because of the large amount of late registrations.
Registrations are due in the state 4-H youth development office by August 17, 2007. Between August 18 and noon on August 30,an additional $25.00 will be charged. After noon on August 30, the late fee is $50.00.
If you have questions or concerns regarding the information in the packet, please contact Carmen Burgos by phone (865) 974-2128 or email cburgos@utk.edu.
If by chance you have not noticed, there is a slight change in the name of the forum. To avoid confusion, the forum is now referred to as Southern Region Volunteer Forum instead of Southern Region Leader Forum.
