ACCESS 4-H INTERNET PLATFORM DEVELOPMENT UNDERWAY
Development of the new the Access 4-H Internet Platform has begun after months of in-depth research and analysis. More than a Web site…greater than an online portal – Access 4-H will offer a comprehensive set of integrated online applications, services and tools.
The Access 4-H Platform will aim to create a one-stop home for information, instruction and interaction for the 4-H community to deliver research-driven programs; revitalize and expand the 4-H brand beyond traditional audiences; recruit new youth to 4-H clubs; and increase the capacity to recruit, train, support and retain 4-H volunteers and professionals.
The Access 4-H Platform is designed to bring together members of the 4-H family as never before. And, as such, we need and invite your feedback now and in the weeks and months ahead.
To do this, the Access 4-H Platform blog has been launched to serve as an important tool for information and interaction during the developmental stages. Through these posts, the Access 4-H development team will strive to keep you informed on their progress and invite you to share comments, ideas and recommendations. Go to 4-H.com/access4-H/ to read the first entries and visit often as new posts are added. To make the most of this interactive blog, please provide your thoughts and comments as well!

SEVIER COUNTY 4-H’ER AMONG AMERICA’S TOP YOUTH VOLUNTEERS
Emily Hollingsworth, 4-H member from Sevier County was named one of America’s top youth volunteers for 2007. in the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Emily was selected as a Distinguished Finalist from a field of more than 20,000 applicants across the country. She received an engraved bronze medallion as her award.
Emily, a senior at Gatlinburg-Pittman High School in Gatlinburg, collected more than 11,000 new and gently used books to help restock a Louisiana school library devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Emily distributed collection boxes to schools and other locations throughout the community, created an advertising campaign, recruited volunteers, and coordinated a Valentine’s Day donation rally. She then solicited donations to pay for transportation, and delivered the books to the St. Bernard Parish Unified School in Chalmette.
Conducted in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created 12 years ago by Prudential Financial, Inc. to encourage youth volunteerism and to identify and reward young role models. Since then, the program has honored more than 75,000 young volunteers at the local, state and national level.
Applications for the 2007 awards program were submitted last fall through schools, Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and volunteer centers affiliated with the Points of Light Foundation.
More information about The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and this year’s honorees can be found at www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/prudential.

TENNESSEE 4-H’ERS TO ATTEND NICE CONFERENCE
Erika Betschart from Warren County and Grant Monroe from Decatur County have been selected to represent Tennessee at the 2007 National Institute on Cooperative Education (NICE) Conference in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. The conference will be held on the Shippensburg University, July 17-22.
The conference is intended to provide a deeper understanding of cooperatives to the youth attending. Participants will gain an understanding of how cooperatives differ from other business forms and will hear cooperative success stories in both the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. In a team setting, attendees will serve as managers of a simulated cooperative store, competing with other stores in their market area for sales and profit. Teams will also analyze case studies, develop their own student-run cooperative, and participate in team-building and leadership development activities. The closing session will recognize the teams that have been the top performers in various conference activities.
Erika and Grant were selected for this honor as result of being state finalists in Level II citizenship and leadership competition at Tennessee 4-H Congress earlier this spring. Their trip is being sponsored by the Tennessee Council of Cooperatives. Jamie Harris, Warren County Extension agent will be accompanying the Tennessee delegation as chaperone.
