4-H ENROLLMENT REPORT UPDATE

We have received many calls and emails regarding completion of the ES-237 report for 2006-07. As mentioned in previous articles and during our 4-H inservice, due dates may be off slightly this year due to the transition. However, consideration will be provided and agents will be given sufficient time to meet reporting requirements. Your efforts and patience with this process is greatly appreciated!

Here are some points to remember:

* Blue Ribbon software will not be used to generate Tennessee enrollment reports. We no longer have a contract with the company.
* 2006-07 county enrollment data will not be due to the state office August 15, 2007.
* All counties need to have 2006-07 enrollment information in Blue Ribbon ready for upload. This means have 4-H member's name, grade, address, gender and race/ethnicity information entered correctly and ready for the next step... uploading data to SUPER.
* When the process to upload 2006-07 enrollment data from Blue Ribbon to SUPER is ready, complete instructions will be provided for counties to follow and execute the upload.
* When SUPER enrollment module is released, instructions will be provided to complete the enrollment reporting process for 2006-07.
* If you have any questions, please call Carmen Burgos at the state 4-H office 865-974-2128 or send an email to cburgos@tennessee.edu.

Changes have been made to the 4-H enrollment forms. The new forms can be found on the 4-H Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/. 4-H enrollment data collection is now more in line with the SUPER enrollment module. There is a form for 4th graders and a form for 5-12th graders. Please check that the new form you have printed has poultry listed under projects.

If you start meeting clubs before we are able to complete the upload process, please do not enter 2007-08 information in the SUPER enrollment module or in Blue Ribbon. Wait for further instructions

Again, I greatly appreciate your patience. If you have a specific question or concern, do not hesitate to contact me.

COFFEE COUNTY PLACES 2ND IN NATIONAL 4-H FORESTRY INVITATION

Coffee County forestry teamThe Coffee County 4-H forestry judging team earned second place honors at the 28th annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational, July 22-26. Tennessee was among 17 states competing in the invitational held at West Virginia University's Jackson's Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston, West Virginia. The International Paper Company Foundation, the Association of Natural Resources Extension Professionals and the Cooperative Extension Service sponsored the event.

Tennessee was represented by Coffee County team members Nathan Jones, Miranda Hunt, Jonathan Mills and Andrew Russell. Dean Northcutt, Coffee County Extension leader, coached the team. He was assisted by volunteer leaders Barry Rhoads and Lori Jones.

Illinois earned the top team score and Georgia placed third. Chris Francis of Illinois received the high-point individual award. Second place was awarded to Illinois' Neno Muganda and third place went to Miranda Hunt of Tennessee.

Team members compete for overall team and individual awards in several categories. Events included a forestry written exam, tree identification, tree measurement, compass orienteering, insect and disease identification, topographic map use, the Forestry Bowl and forest evaluation.

In addition to the national sponsors, the Tennessee team received additional support from various organizations, businesses and individuals who support the forestry project through the Tennessee 4-H Foundation. Sincere appreciation is extended to Larry Tankersley, UT Extension forestry specialist for his assistance in giving leadership to our state event and preparing our 4-H’ers for the national contest.

OPPORTUNITY FOR 4-H FAMILIES

Cathann Kress, Director, Youth Development - CSREES, USDA, shared with state 4-H directors/leaders the following opportunity for 4-H members.

On behalf of Founding sponsors Allied Insurance, Nationwide Agribusiness and John Deere, complimentary memberships to the Country Living Association (CLA) are being offered to families of 4-H members. The mission of the association is to create and foster a community for like-minded people who share a passion for country living. The association values the commitment of 4-H to promote leadership, citizenship and life skills for youth and wishes to provide an additional means for both youth and their families to expand their knowledge. Through the Web site, five regional clinics, a national event in October and an official publication Living the Country Life offer connectivity to others with similar interests.

To join the Country Living Association, go to www.countrylivingassociation.org and use the special code of 4H2007. You may contact Courtney Yuskis, Director of CLA with any questions at 636-449-5008 or yuskis@drakeco.com. CLA was publicly launched on January 1, 2007. As of April, there are nearly 9,000 members.

You should have received a high quality JPEG photo of your state project winners, college scholarship recipients and Vol State recipients. These photos should be suitable for use in your local newspaper(s). If you would like to have a print, any photo developer should be able to make one from these files. Please contact me if you failed to receive a picture of any of your participants.

TOP JUNIOR 4-H CAMP COUNTIES CONGRATULATED

Kudos to the top-participating counties at junior 4-H camp for 2007. These counties are well on their way to engaging a new group of enthusiastic and energized youth into their 4-H program. Congratulations on a bright, green and white future!

Junior 4-H camp has been described as the "foundation of 4-H participation." As a result of participation in junior 4-H camp, youth may likely increase their participation in other 4-H programs. In addition, there may also be increased participation by adult and teen leaders, and nowhere is there a better chance to establish positive adult/youth partnerships than at junior 4-H camp. The top 25 counties at 2007 junior 4-H camp were:

Williamson - 177
Sumner - 168
Sevier - 144
Robertson - 138
Rutherford - 131
Putnam - 109
White - 107
Montgomery - 106
Cheatham - 105
Bedford - 104
Henry - 100
Wilson - 99
Franklin - 98
Maury - 97
Madison - 96
Bradley - 95
Loudon - 92
Macon - 91
Obion - 91
Roane - 90
Hickman - 87
Sullivan - 84
Warren - 83
Marshall - 78
Monroe - 78

The average county sent 57.957 youth to junior 4-H camp in 2007. Thanks to everyone involved with the junior 4-H camping program for establishing "the 4-H experience" for the next generation.
