SMITH COUNTY 4-H MEATS TEAM SHINES AT NATIONAL CONTEST
Smith County 4-H'ers represented Tennessee by winning numerous awards at the National 4-H Meats Judging Contest, held October 17 in conjunction with the American Royal in Kansas City. Team members were Amber Allen, Monica Wilmore and Holly Dickens. Sarah McDonald was also a member of the state-winning team, but was unable to attend national competition. Fifteen teams competed in the contest, held on the campus of Kansas State University.
Tennessee received a plaque for being 1st in the retail judging division, receiving 434 points out of a possible 450 points. Monica Wilmore was high individual in this division, scoring 148 points out of 150. Holly Dickens scored 143 and Amber Allen scored 144 to complete the team's winning score, which edged out the second place Illinois team by one point. Additional team awards for Tennessee were 4th place in pork judging, 5th place in reasons, 8th place in beef judging, 9th place in retail identification and 8th in total judging. The team completed the contest as the 8th high team overall.
Monica Wilmore almost made a clean sweep of the individual awards, winning high individual in five of the six categories of judging (beef, pork, retail judging, retail identification, total reasons and total judging), finishing the entire contest as 2nd high individual overall. In addition to six plaques, Monica brought home a $750 college scholarship for her achievements in meats judging. Contest officials could not recall an individual doing this well in a previous contests. An additional individual award of 8th high individual in total reasons was made to Holly Dickens.
Team coaches and volunteer leaders Bill and Connie Kuecker were very proud of the achievements of this team. The team traveled to Omaha, Nebraska, where they were given a tour of Nebraska Beef Company. The University of Nebraska held a workout for teams prior to the contest where recruiters talked to the 4-H'ers about opportunities in agriculture. Touring the campuses of the University of Nebraska and Kansas State University broadened the scope of opportunities for these 4-H'ers.
The team made these accomplishments with the help of numerous individuals and groups, including sponsorship from the Tennessee Beef Industry Council, Hardison/Melton Endowment Fund, Tennessee Sheep Producers Association, Tennessee Pork Producers Association and Tennessee Cattlemen's Association. Additionally these Smith County residents generously supported these 4-H'ers through funds raised by selling baked goods at a festival. Local grocery stores opened their meat departments for these 4-H'ers. Special thanks go to the Publix store in Lebanon and Owl Holler Processing in Lafayette for holding cutting demonstrations prior to the trip! Thanks to all this support, these 4-H'ers received more than awards by competing in the National 4-H Meats Judging Contest.
