HENRY COUNTY PARTICIPATES IN NAILE 4-H DAIRY QUIZ BOWL
The Henry County Dairy Quiz Bowl team represented Tennessee at the 28th Invitational 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl during the North America International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky, November 2-3. The team, composed of Kelsey Smith, Jacob Leach, Hallie Rushing, Elizabeth Sumners and coached by volunteer Laura Parchment, had previously been named state champions at the June Dairy Month Kick Off luncheon in Nashville.
This year 18 states were represented at the contest. Teams competed in a series of one-on-one elimination contests until the top team was chosen. Competition between teams was divided into three phases. The phases consisted of a 50-question quiz, five higher degrees of difficulty team questions and a toss-up round.
The Dairy Quiz Bowl attracts young people from throughout the United States, ranging from the Pacific shores of Washington State, to the Atlantic shores of the nation’s east coast. Teams of four members compete against each other. Competition points are awarded for correctly answering questions about the dairy industry and closely related areas.
The competition encourages youth to develop a more complete knowledge of dairy animals and related subjects. This contest provides an educational dairy program for all dairy project members, including those who may not own a dairy project animal, and provides a way to develop alertness and self-confidence.

PROGRAMS OF DISTINCTION
Recently while attending the NAE4-HA conference in Atlanta, I participated in a seminar on the Programs of Distinction. The Programs of Distinction is a collection of descriptions of high quality, peer-reviewed state and local 4-H youth development programs around the country.
You may ask why you should submit an entry. The Programs of Distinction are designed to help Extension professionals communicate the high quality of youth development program; assist others in improving their practices in positive youth development; and report program outcomes through a peer evaluated format. This is also an opportunity to publish in a recognized publication like the Journal of Youth Development. The Programs of Distinction also offer the opportunity to submit for monetary awards and to be nationally recognized.
One important note is that UT Extension has in place with the Individual Action Agendas, the Life Skills Evaluation System and soon to be functional PEN system, we already have the mechanisms and processes in place to make it easier to submit.
We have a lot of resources to help you with your submission. Our department will be offering to assist anyone wishing to submit a program with the preparation of the manuscript. Steve Sutton, state 4-H Youth Development specialist, serves as a member of the national Programs of Distinction peer review committee. Since Steve is on the peer review committee, he can offer assistance. Lori Belew has excellent writing and communication skills and is also willing to assist with editing and formatting the documents.
I will be writing more articles about the Programs of Distinction in the future and encouraging some of you to submit. You have excellent county 4-H programs and give so many youth opportunities through 4-H. Why not showcase, share and be recognized for your efforts?

RECRUIT NOW FOR YOUTH/ADULT VOLUNTEERS AT CAMPS AND CONFERENCES
The time is now! Many families start making plans for the summer during the holidays when families are together. It is during this time they can include their plans to volunteer at one or more of the Tennessee camps and conferences scheduled for the summer of 2008. You can give them an application now! It is available at
4h.tennessee.edu/centersandcamping/forms.htm. Volunteering at a camp or conference is an excellent way to increase involvement in the county 4-H program. In addition, make sure that volunteers receive proper training prior to involvement.
