HONOR CLUB/CONTINUING SERVICE END-OF-YEAR DEADLINE

Many counties initiate their new Honor Club members or recognize their Junior High Continuing Service Award recipients at the beginning of the year. Nocona Cannady, our student assistant working with Honor Club applications and Junior High Continuing Service will be leaving on December 12 and will not return until January 10. Please keep this in mind if you have Honor Club applications that need to be approved or 4-H’ers to recommend for Junior High Continuing Service. TENNESSEE 4-H’ERS ATTEND NATIONAL DAIRY CONFERENCE

Tennessee delegate to National 4-H Dairy ConferenceKelsey Smith (Henry County) and Julie Ozburn (Williamson County) attended the 2007 National 4-H Dairy Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, September 30 through October 4. Kelsey and Julie were selected as delegates at State 4-H Roundup earlier this summer. Staci Foy, Henry County Extension agents served as chaperone for the trip.

The conference was attended by 4-H members in the dairy project from all over the United States and Canada. One of the first activities for Kelsey and Julie was a pin swap, where everyone exchanged pins and other state memorabilia. They made many new friends and met 4-H members from many different areas.

The group toured many farms and dairy related businesses in and around Madison. The tours included ABS Global, Hoard's Dairyman Guernsey Farm, Hoard's Dairyman Magazine, National Dairy Shrine Museum and Nasco International. The group was also able to spend half a day at the World Dairy Expo.

Kelsey and Julie were also able to tour some area dairy farms, including a 2,400 head replacement heifer farm, an organic dairy and a dairy farm that included its own cheese factory and manure digester. The manure digester captured methane gas and generated enough electricity to run the entire farm.

In addition to the tours, the 4-H members also participated in seminars and workshops relating to dairy farming with leadership from University of Wisconsin Extension specialists.

The 4-H members not only enjoyed an educational experience, they also made friends and connections all around the United States during recreational times that included dances, ice breakers and a hypnotist. The cap-note speaker for the event was motivational speaker, author and song-writer Dan Clark.
