4-H GIS/GPS PROGRAMMING UPDATE

On December 20, Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), developer of the world’s leading geographic information system (GIS) software, will announce the 2008 GIS grants program for 4-H. This is a collaborative project of ESRI and USDA-CSREES to foster and support the integration of GIS software in U.S. 4-H clubs. 4-H members will plan and carry out community service projects that utilize GIS to organize and present data about their community, and publish their results in the ESRI Community Atlas.

There will be two categories of grants available: Introductory Grants for 4-H clubs new to GIS and GPS and Intermediate Grants for those 4-H clubs that received previous ESRI 4-H grants and completed the grant requirements. There will be 75 grants awarded by ESRI this year to 4-H clubs in the U.S. Projects that are funded will receive a 25-seat license to several ESRI ArcView GIS software products, plus access to the ESRI Virtual Campus online training.

Under the 2004-2007 GIS Grant for U.S. 4-H program, ESRI has awarded 4-H Clubs in over 500 U.S. counties with ArcView and ArcPad software and Virtual Campus training. GIS technology was used by youth to help make a difference in their community service projects.

The 4-H grant application period will be from January 1, 2008 through February 28, 2008. Please check the Webpage referenced above, for the 2008 4-H grant guidelines and application. Complete details information on this opportunity is found at www.esri.com/industries/k-12/4-h/grants.html.

Tim Prather will be the 4-H GIS/GPS contact for Tennessee. You can contact him if you have questions regarding the ESRI grants program or other GIS/GPS 4-H programs you wish to conduct in your county. Perhaps you have some ideas for incorporating GPS and GIS in your 4-H programs, but do not plan to apply for the ESRI grants. He can help you with ideas and technical assistance to avoid some common mistakes. Daniel Sarver is the specialist responsible for 4-H Science Engineering and Technology.

FOND FAREWELL

I am sad and excited (if you can be both) to announce my resignation from my position in the State 4-H Office effective December 31, 2007. In my position, I have had the opportunity to work with such amazing youth. I credit the county and regional staff for their tremendous success in the 4-H program, as you work with them all the time - I just get to reap the benefits when they arrive to assist with state events. I am constantly in awe and inspired when I think of the amount of work that agents and extension personnel are able to so unselfishly give of their professional (and often, personal) time. Thank you for all that you do, and for assisting me in making my time here one that has been fun and rewarding….and one that was a difficult choice to move away from.

The exciting part comes in when I announce that I am leaving to pursue my dream of becoming a full-time professional speaker. Yes, my parents are still amazed that someone is going to pay me to talk - and I bet they secretly feel bad for all those times they told me to hush! I have taken a position with a company that will allow me to be a keynote speaker, as well as a leadership coach to student organizations on a national level, and an event planner. (Think of it like planning a Roundup every week! EEK!!) We even assist with National 4-H Conference, so my roots with the 4-H program remain firmly planted!

If I can ever be of any assistance to you, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at amy@teamtri.com or amy@sweetcorncompany.com OR I have faith that SOMEONE in the state 4-H office can find me!

Again, thank you for all of your support, and I wish you a HAPPY HOLIDAY and a very successful 2008!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Don't be fooled by the calendar. There are only as many days in the year as you make use of.
